Y2K, Word on users group's agendaThe annual meeting of the Association of Publishing Systems Users (APSU) will be held Sept. 12-16 in Palm Springs, Calif. APSU, the outgrowth of the now-defunct Atex Newspaper Users Group, does not focus on any one system supplier's product line. The meetings and workshops embrace across-the-board issues, though there are still many sessions about Atex-specific products, such as Enterprise and DewarView. The five-day meeting includes a number of sessions. Some highlights:

Previously Seibert was technology development manager for editorial, working out of the information technology department; somewhere back in his career, Seibert once was a good photographer. Moving from IT to the newsroom with Seibert is Eddie Rossie, the CCI Europe superuser. Also at the Republic, Dena Greenawalt, previously technology development manager for advertising, now substitutes the word "publishing" for "advertising" in her title and takes over responsibility for editorial, advertising and marketing, production and web development. ... At the New York State Bar Journal, Howard Angione was named editor-in-chief. Angione, who edited The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual, worked in news technology at the New York Times for 10 years before going to St. John's University Law School in the mid-'80s. ... Mirroring the times: At the Los Angeles Times, Mark Kurtich has been named senior vice president of operations; he had been vice president of operations since 1997. Previously, Kurtich spent 26 years with the Hartford Courant in Connecticut, starting as a composing room trainee. ... At PG&E Energy Services of San Francisco, Debra Domeyer has been named chief information officer and vice president for information systems and technology. Previously Domeyer was head of information systems for Times Mirror Co. ... At The Sun of Baltimore, Charles Fertig has resigned as publishing systems manager. Fertig, the former pre-press supervisor of the News-Press & Gazette in St. Joseph, Mo., is returning to Missouri for family considerations. ... Real bits: At A.H. Belo Corp. of Dallas, Dale Peskin has been promoted to the newly created position of vice president for interactive media in Belo's Publishing Division. Peskin previously was an assistant managing editor at the Dallas Morning News, with responsibility for developing the newspaper's interactive media projects; before that, he was a deputy managing editor at the Detroit News. ... At the Daily Camera in Boulder, Colo., Garth Hospers has been named operations director. Previously, Hospers was production director at the Monterey County Herald in California and before that was the longtime production director at The Post-Bulletin in Rochester, Minn. ... Association advancements: At the Newspaper Association of America in Vienna, Va., two new technology vice presidents have been named -- John Iobst and Tom Croteau. Known around the world as "Dr. John," Iobst is a 21-year NAA (and ANPA) veteran and a computer scientist (Ph.D. from Lehigh University) most recently in charge of technical standards and guidelines; he will continue in that role. Croteau, an acknowledged industry expert on quality in color printing, joined NAA in 1993; previously he had been an industry consultant and before that worked for nine years at USA Today as a production coordinator, quality manager and production director. He is now in charge of newspaper services and oversees the technology department's day-to-day activities. ... Vendor vitality: At AD-Star Services Inc. of Marina del Rey, Calif., Adam Leff has been named chief operating officer and vice president. Previously Leff was a principal at AdOne Classified Network and worked in classifieds and new media at the Los Angeles Times. ... At CareerPath.com of Los Angeles, Patricia Lady has been named vice president of new business development; previously she was director of business development. Her career includes a stop at Janss Corp. of Santa Monica, Calif.; she also was supervisor of general accounting at Times Mirror VideoTex Services in Costa Mesa, Calif. ... At Heidelberg Color Publishing Solutions (née LinoColor) of Hauppauge, Scot Edwards has been named general manager for the Americas. Previously Edwards was senior vice president for marketing at Peak Technologies Inc., a global systems integrator, and before that held executive positions at Lexmark and Epson. Also at Heidelberg CPS, Yvette Bender has been named national sales manager; previously she had been national accounts manager. Before that, she had been with NewGen, C. Itoh, Sharp Electronics and Mitsubishi International. ... At Infonautics Corp. of New York, Chief Financial Officer Ronald Berg has resigned to pursue an opportunity with a start-up company. Infonautics named Freddi O'Brien, previously the director of financial reporting, as acting chief financial officer while the company searches for a replacement. ... At Monotype Systems Inc. of Rolling Meadows, Ill., Dan Scheck has been named a sales executive for the Northeast. Previously Scheck was with Ferag. ... At Media Passage of Seattle, Michael Ostrem has been named senior vice president for administration. Previously Ostrem held the position of chief operating officer for Preston Gates & Ellis, one of Seattle's leading law firms. Also at Media Passage, Sasha Press has been named executive vice president and chief financial officer. Press was formerly controller and principal accounting officer of Western Wireless Corp. ... At Purup-Eskofot of Kennesaw, Ga., Rick Mangold has been named president. Previously Mangold was the company's vice president of sales and marketing and before that spent 17 years with Agfa Corp. Mangold replaces Jeff Green, a 30-year industry veteran, who is retiring. Also at Purup-Eskofot, David Smith has been named director of service and applications support; previously Smith held a similar position with the company's United Kingdom division. ... At Quark Inc. of Denver, Kurt Dressel has been named vice president of sales and marketing. Previously Dressel was vice president of sales and marketing of Gannett Media Technologies International. and before that he held executive positions with Agfa, Atex and Du Pont. ... At Tribune Media Services of Chicago, Aylesa Singley has been named account executive for commercial sales in North America (she will be responsible for TMS TV Listings information and services for use in electronic media and other commercial applications); previously Singley worked for more than 18 years for cable TV giant Viacom in various subsidiaries, including Showtime and MTV. ...
