New users join APSU sessionThe Association of Publishing Systems Users, universally known as APSU, will hold its annual meeting Sept. 29-Oct. 3 in Niagara Falls, N.Y. APSU brings together users of systems from a variety of suppliers, including Advanced Technical Solutions (ATS) of Wilmington, Mass., Agile Enterprise Inc. of Nashua, N.H., Atex Media Solutions Inc. of Bedford, Mass., Autologic Information International (AII) of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Unisys Publishing Systems of Blue Bell, Pa. This year, users of products from Edgil Associates Inc. of North Chelmsford, Mass., also will be represented. Sessions include meetings with supplier representatives as well as closed-door meetings where suppliers are prohibited. ATS session topics will include remote advertising management (AdFax, AdFast and AdsOnTime), AdVisor and MediaDesk. Agile sessions will cover an update on the company, a bug discussion, web publishing issues, "Confessions of a pack rat" (it's about archiving), system administration tools, customization, SQL and page production issues. Atex users will discuss Ads Online, DewarView, 50-inch web conversion, accounts receivable, the Prestige editorial front-end, support, ClassPag and Architect, SQL, Quark tips and tricks, contact management, migration, ad workflow services, editorial redesign, Enterprise, Prestige-to-Web, the J-11 Swap Meet, database recovery techniques and web success stories. On tap for AII users will be sessions on support and customer service, RIPs, Oman, implementation schemes, Ad Manager 5, Apscom, Page Manager and Plateroom Manager. Unisys users will hear about revenue generation, event handling, the Supervisor product, ad rating, 50-inch web conversion, advertising production direction, editorial support, report generators, editorial tips and tricks, accounts receivable, editorial features, functions and enhancements, user ideas, advertising upgrades, Internet access in the newsroom and remote access. Bit bucket ...New media mavens: At the San Diego Union-Tribune, Chris Jennewein has been named director of Internet operations; he will be responsible for the 70-person SignOnSanDiego.com enterprise and will serve on the paper's executive committee. For the last decade Jennewein has been with Knight Ridder of San Jose, helping with the start-up of the San Jose Mercury News' Mercury Center and eventually becoming vice president of operations at Knight Ridder Digital. Jennewein helped develop a bulletin-board system at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in the 1980s, and earlier in his career was a reporter and editor. ... At New Directions for News at the University of Minnesota, Dale Peskin has been named executive director; previously Peskin was a vice president at Belo Interactive of Dallas. In earlier lives, he had been an editor, art director and new media guru at a variety of newspapers, including the Detroit News. ... Vendor vibrations: At CCI Europe of Denmark and Kennesaw, Ga., Glenn Reinemund has been named a sales executive; previously Reinemund was with Open Pages Inc. of Westford, Mass., and in an earlier life was in charge of international sales at System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento. ... At Graphic Enterprises Inc. of North Canton, Ohio, Les Beyeler has been named interim president and chief executive officer. Previously, Beyeler -- a 26-year veteran of the company who started out as an account representative -- had been corporate vice president and executive vice president. Beyeler replaces Richard Jusseaume, who stepped down from the presidency in May. Jusseaume remains chairman of the board. ... At Mactive Inc. of Melbourne, Fla., Don Rogers has joined the company as controller. Rogers has had a long and colorful career in publishing systems; most recently he had been general manager of Harris Publishing Systems Corp. (Hpsc) between 1997 and 2000. From 1992 to 1997, Rogers was general manager of Harris subsidiary Baseview Products Inc. of Ann Arbor, Mich. Earlier in his career, Rogers was a co-founder of Deucalion, a typesetting software firm, and in the 1970s was president of Computype, a publishing systems supplier. Further at Mactive, Jud Edwards has been named sales manager; previously Edwards had been with Hpsc for 12 years. Also at Mactive, four implementation specialists have been hired: George Smith, who was formerly with TAP Publishing and Hpsc; Jewel Fox, who was previously a computer specialist with The Citizen of Laconia, N.H., a Foster's Publishing Co. paper; Monte Shambaugh, who had been with Dictaphone, and Rudy Sierra, who had been with Nextel Communications. ... Confabs: The biggest printing show is Print01, to be held Sept. 13-16 in Chicago. While there will be sessions -- Anne Mulcahy of Xerox Corp., Frank Romano of the Rochester Institute of Technology and William Davis of R.R. Donnelley & Sons will discuss the "state of the industry" for printing and graphic arts -- it will be the thousands of booths that will bring 'em in.
