Connecting through ConnectionsFocusing on "real revenue," Connections 2001, the Newspaper Association of America's annual meeting of its New Media Federation, will be held July 19-22 in Washington, D.C. And this organization is exactly that forum." Editors and technology: At the World Editors Forum, based in Paris, Gloria Brown Anderson has been elected president for a two-year term. Anderson is the vice president for international and editorial development at the News Services Division of the New York Times. Her career ranges from having been the editor and publisher of Miami's Kendall Gazette to being a reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer and the Associated Press (with stops along the way as the managing editor of the Miami News and editor-in-chief of the New York Times Syndication Sales Corp.). "This is a special time in the lives of editors because technology is changing so quickly," Anderson said. ... Anderson succeeds Ruth de Aquino, the 1999-2000 World Editors Forum president, who moves on to become the director of editorial strategy at IFRA, the international newspaper technology group based in Darmstadt, Germany. De Aquino, the former editor-in-chief and director of journalism at O Dia in her native Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will focus on Ifra's Centre for Advanced News Operations and the Newsplex laboratory that has been developed in cooperation with the University of South Carolina, where the facility is hosted. IFRA said that de Aquino would partner with the center's executive director, Kerry Northrup, in developing next-generation news-handling methods and technologies. ... The more consultants, the better: Two leading newspaper new media executives have teamed up to form Finberg-Gentry, The Digital Futurist Consultancy. Howard Finberg, the former director of technology and information strategies at Central Newspapers Inc. of Phoenix, has had a wide-ranging newspaper career, having been an editor at the Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle and Arizona Republic. Leah Gentry, the former editorial director of LATimes.com, worked in reporting, editing and new media at the Orange County Register and the Chicago Tribune, and was managing editor of Excite.com. ... Jeffrey Litvak has started Marigot Systems LLC of Nashua, N.H. Litvak is the former senior project manager for the Omnex content management system at Atex Media Solutions; previously he had held a similar title at CText Inc. ... Real bits: At the San Jose Mercury News, Vice President for Operations Jerry Polk has taken early retirement. Polk, the former assistant composing room foreman at Ohio's Akron Beacon Journal, previously had been the production manager and vice president for operations at Philadelphia Newspapers Inc., the production director at the Long Beach Press Telegram in Southern California and the vice president for operations at the Denver Post. ... At Cox Interactive Media of Atlanta, Chris Kelly has been promoted to director of product development. Previously Kelly had been the general manager of DiscoverOmaha.com, a CIMedia property, and had been with Utell International and Sabre Travel. ... Vendor vitality: At Adobe Systems Inc. of San Jose, Mark Niemann-Ross has been named cross-media evangelist; previously Niemann-Ross had been a marketing executive with Extensis and had worked in developer relations at both Managing Editor Inc. and Quark Inc.. ... Baseview Products Inc., the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based division of Harris Publishing Systems, has made a raft of new hires. Steve Sulouff has been named technical sales director for the JazShak application service provider business; previously he had been management information systems director at the Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake, Ill. David Quinn has been named controller; previously Quinn was a CPA in Ann Arbor. Ed Ernest has been named webmaster; previously Ernest had been with EDS. Also at Baseview, Charlie Passut has been promoted to multimedia developer; he had been a trainer with the company. ... Jessica Napoli has been named director of international publisher relations and administration in the New York office; previously Napoli had been with the syndicate's parent organization, Tribune Media Services, where she was a sales representative. Eric McPherson has been named director of Asia operations; previously McPherson had been a sales representative working out of the Hong Kong office. ...
