Biggest little confab in Pennsylvania

America East, an intimate newspaper conference and trade show, will be March 26-28 in Hershey, Pa.

The keynote speaker will be Paul Camp, formerly of Thomson Target Media, who is now the chief executive of Content That Works of Chicago. Camp's topic: the future of the newspaper business.

A special seminar, "Managing the Advertising Department," will address the "Main Street approach relative to each facet of advertising management."

David Lightfoot, president of Chesapeake Resource Group of Annapolis, Md., will present a panel session dealing with all aspects of computer-to-plate (CTP) technology.

A session called "Building a Better Production Mousetrap," is aimed at exploring "non-traditional operation opportunities for production."

Robert Hacker, professor emeritus at New York's Rochester Institute of Technology, shares insights into how publishers can deal with quality issues.

New Media World is held in conjunction with America East. Session titles include "Wireless Publishing," "Do You Know What Your Page Views Mean," "The Difference Between Web and Print Journalism," "NIFT, NewsML, XML: Making Sense of the New Net Alphabet Soup" and "Is Your Newspaper Ready for the Everyday Web?"

The keynote for New Media World will be delivered by Mike Steele of Florida's Orlando Sentinel, whose topic will be "Building for Convergence."

The 20-year telecommunications and media industry veteran, comes to the newly created position at Scripps from Discovery Communications Inc., where for the last three years he has been senior vice president of interactive technology and new media development. ... At the Times Publishing Co. of St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg Times, Congressional Quarterly, Florida Trend, etc.), Elizabeth Sholar has been named chief technology officer; previously, Sholar was vice president of technology at Thomson Newspapers and in earlier lives had been vice president of the Globe and Mail of Toronto and had served in technology positions at the Morning Call in Allentown, Pa., and at the Chicago Tribune. ... At Village Voice Media of New York City, Ray Douglas has been named chief information officer; previously Douglas was the vice president of systems and technology for the New York Times. ...

New media mavens: At Cox Interactive Media (CIMedia) of Atlanta, Sonya McLaughlin has rejoined the company as director of sales programs; most recently, she was senior account manager for Go.com (formerly Infoseek) in Atlanta and before that was with CIMedia, first as a sponsorship sales manager beginning and then as divisional sales manager for CIMedia's East Coast division. Also at CIMedia, Glenn McLaren has been named city site manager of its San Antonio, Texas, web site, sa360.com; previously, McLaren was the site's content manager, and before that, was news manager for the Sun-Sentinel Internet Edition in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and also served as on-line editor for Caller-Times Interactive, Corpus Christi, Texas. In earlier lives, McLaren was on the sports copy desk of the Caller-Times and was with the Galveston County Daily News and points south. ... Errors and omissions: In the February issue, Editor and Publisher David M. Cole made two mistakes in his coverage of a presentation made by David Underhill of Tribune Co. at January's SuperConference: Tribune has 22 television stations, rather than the 18 that Cole reported, and Underhill's closing line at the conference was mangled; it should have read, "Please support standards interoperability."
