It might be your type"Designing with Type," a conference at the Poynter Institute, will be held May 11-13 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Geared toward both the recent journalism graduate and the veteran news artist, the conference will address issues such as creating drama and excitement through the limited font palette, making type selections in the redesign process to complement a redefined mission and audience as well as mastering ways to discuss, critique, manage and teach excellence in typographic design. The system was so successful in-house, the company approved creation of Gazette Technologies as a separate business unit to sell and support it. In earlier lives, Hannah was computer services manager for the Milwaukee's Journal/Sentinel Inc. and before that he held several systems positions at the Detroit News. ... At Nebraska's Omaha World Herald, Mark Wilkins has been named director of information technology; previously Wilkins had been CIO of Omaha's Empire Fire and Marine Insurance Co. ... New media mavens: At Hearst Interactive Media of New York City, Darcy Bentley and Timothy Ladin have been named directors of business development. Bentley was formerly vice president of e2enet Inc. and Ladin was an associate at Clifford Chance Rogers & Wells L.L.P. ... At KnightRidder.com of San Jose, Tally Liu has been appointed senior vice president for finance and operations; formerly, Liu was a vice president of parent company Knight Ridder and earlier he was vice president and CFO of the San Jose Mercury News. ... At E.W. Scripps Co. of Cincinatti, Frank Gardner has been named to the newly created position of senior vice president for interactive media. Gardner has been senior vice president for television for Scripps since 1993. ... At the Star Tribune of Minneapolis, Nick Rogosienski has been named vice president, interactive media; most recently Rogosienski had been director of sales and marketing for new media at the paper and had served as site manager for the paper's Home Zone classified web site. Also at the Star Tribune, Tim McGuire, editor and senior vice president, who started startribune.com, now becomes chairman of the internal board of directors that will "serve to govern strategy and reconcile resource priorities." ... Previously, Ting was principal consultant in the entertainment and media corporate strategy group at PricewaterhouseCoopers Management Consulting. ... Susanna Stroud Mapies is general manager for the Southwest region; most recently, she worked for the Denver Rocky Mountain News as an advertising national account manager. Katherine Wager is general manager for the Northwest region; she too came from the Denver Rocky Mountain News, where she was the advertising national account manager for the Northeast region. ... At Applied Graphics Technologics Inc. of New York, Derek Ashley has been named chief executive officer; most recently, he had been vice chairman and chief operating officer. Previously, Ashley was with the Wace Group Plc., which was acquired by AGT last year. Fred Drasner, AGT's former chairman and chief executive officer, will continue in his role as chairman and will serve as chairman of the executive committee of the board. ... At the Associated Press in New York, Thomas Slaughter, an AP vice president and director of strategic planning since 1993, has been named director of AP Digital. ... At Atex Media Solutions Inc. of Bedford, Mass., Roberto Zerbino has been named managing director of Atex Latin America. Previously he was regional sales manager at Goss Graphic Systems for Latin America, Mexico and the Caribbean, and he held sales management positions with Hyphen Latin America Inc. and DuPont Newspaper Systems. ...
