Real bits: At the 721,000-circulation Chicago Tribune, Mark Hinojosa has been named assistant managing editor for photography; he'd been director thereof. ... At the 145,000-circulation Fresno Bee in bucolic California, Gary Funk has been named systems editor -- he came from the even more bucolic 84,000-circulation Bakersfield Californian. ... At the Jackson (Tenn.) Sun, Scott Anderson has been named systems editor; before the sentence, he was happily serving as a sports designer and copy editor. ... New media mavens: At the 407,000-circulation Star Tribune of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Rusty Coats has been named editor of www.startribune.com. Coats is the former content manager for sacbee.com, the 264,000-circulation Sacramento Bee's web site, and before that also designed and managed the 82,000-circulation Modesto Bee's web site, modbee.com (Is it a coincidence that all three papers are owned by The McClatchy Co.?). ... And speaking of McClatchy, at Nando Media of Raleigh, N.C., James Green has been named president and publisher of McClatchy's on-line subsidiary; previously, Green had been marketing director for the Modesto Bee. ... At Times Co. Digital of New York, Catherine Levene has been named vice president, strategy and business development; before that, Levene was vice president of business development for the Internet unit of the New York Times Co. and prior to that was director of marketing for nytoday.com. ... At Times Mirror Interactive of Los Angeles and Baltimore, Jean Halle has been named chief financial officer and vice president of strategic development; Halle had been vice president of new business development for Baltimore's Sun as well as publisher of its web site, SunSpot.com. ... Designs on the presidency: At the Society for News Design of Providence, R.I., the officers moved up in rank this month (the group uses a promotional ladder officer system). Jean Dodd, of the 287,000-circulation Kansas City (Mo.) Star was elected president; Lucie Lacava, of Lucie Lacava Publication Design Inc., Montreal, has moved up from from second vice president to first vice president; Svenåke Boström, on leave from the Sundsvalls Tidning, Sweden, goes up from treasurer to second vice president; Jay Small, new media editor for Indianapolis Newspapers Inc. (and a correspondent for this very publication) moves from SND secretary to SND treasurer, and Susan Mango Curtis, an assistant professor at the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University of Evanston, Ill., was elected secretary (if everything goes to plan, Mango -- as she prefers to be called -- will be SND president in 2004). ... Vendor ventures: At Adobe Systems Inc. of San Jose, President and COO Charles Geschke, who co-founded the company in 1982, will retire at the end of March. Geschke has jointly run Adobe with CEO John Warnock since its inception; Warnock will take on the president's title. ... At Autologic Information International of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Brad Greer has been named commercial sales manager. Previously, Greer was with Gerber Systems. ... At creativepro.com Inc., of Portland, Ore., Rick LePage has been named as vice president of business development; LePage had been publisher of emediaweekly and Macweek magazines and also served as editor-in-chief of Macweek. ... At Kpmg of New York, Chicago and etc., Glenn Cruickshank has been named senior manager in the digital asset management practice; previously he headed up Tribune Solutions, makers of fine archiving products such as NewsView and PhotoView. Cruickshank was a reporter and photographer at Idaho's Lewiston Tribune. Also at Kpmg, Joseph Galarneau Jr. has been named a consultant; he was a short-timer as publishing systems manager at The Sun of Baltimore and in an earlier life had been pre-press manager at the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer. ... At Mactive Inc. of Melbourne, Fla., Tom Carnohan has been named a sales manager. Previously, Carnohan was with Harris Publishing Systems, where he was involved with sales support and marketing activities for nearly 22 years. Earlier, Carnohan worked for Hendrix/Hastech in New Hampshire. ... At MetaCreations Corp. of Carpinteria, Calif., Gary Lauer has resigned as chairman, president and chief executive officer. MetaCreations' business graphics division head, Mark Zimmer, took over and shortly thereafter, the company laid off almost 50 percent of its workforce and sought to sell its graphics products (Kai's Power Tools and Ray Dream Studio) to focus on web software. ... At MediaStream of Philadelphia, Joe DiMarino has been named president; previously he was executive vice president for sales and marketing and was one of the founders of VuText, the predecessor company to MediaStream. Hal Cohen, the former president, will be moving over to an Internet strategy role at parent company Knight Ridder, but continues as a MediaStream officer, having been named executive vice president. Also at MediaStream, Robert Kennedy has been named vice president for technology; the 11-year company veteran had most recently been director of development. ... At Quark Inc. of Denver, Mark Lemmons has been named vice president of strategic development; most recently he was manager of Quark's Internet publishing business unit and will continue to run that group in his new position. ... At Real Media of New York City, Christopher Neimeth has been named president and chief executive officer. Previously, Neimeth had been senior vice president for business development and strategic planning at Times Co. Digital and before that was group vice president of the New York Times Electronic Media Co. and the founder of Grey Interactive. David Morgan, Real Media founder and former chief honcho, will become chairman of the board. Also at Real Media, Silvana Imperiali has been named to the newly created position of chief operating officer. Previously Imperiali had been with Publicitas/Globe Media, where she was marketing director. ...
