Go west, young technologist

The fourth annual America West newspaper technology conference and trade show will be Oct. 6-8 in Reno, Nev.

Almost 80 suppliers are scheduled to exhibit at the trade show.

Highlights of the program include roundtables on pre-press, press and post-press topics and seminars on color management, print quality and 50-inch web width reduction.

The opening session is titled "How to Overcome Procrastination." The Friday breakfast session is "Get Switched On! The Magic of Mission and Momentum" and the closing session topic, "Gaining the Edge! Inspring People to Take Action and Make a Difference."

Speakers include Ken Duffield of the Sacramento Bee, Jerry Polk of the San Jose Mercury News, Ray Reinertson of ReinTech and Brad Patterson of the Los Angeles Times.

Association assignations: At the Newspaper Association of America of Vienna, Va., Eric Wolferman has resigned as senior vice president of technology. Wolferman, a longtime Gannett reporter, editor and technologist, has served as NAA's point-man on operations issues since 1994. He seeks to "pursue other interests and opportunities." ... Also at the NAA, M. Blake Barker has been named to head up the new Newspaper Industry Communications Center (Nicc), a for-profit arm of the association that will provide an Internet-based transaction system for multimarket advertising. Most recently Barker had been group managing director at NTL National Consumer Services in the United Kingdom and previously had held posts with Usa Today and Gannett. ... Another new Niccer is James King, who was named vice president for information technology. King previously was director for information technology for Post-Newsweek Business Information. Prior to that, he was with the Washington Post, where he held positions that included director of newsroom technology, manager of production systems and manager of financial systems. ...

New York state of mind: At the Buffalo News, Ed Cuddihy has been named managing editor for city, news and copy desks; the deputy managing editor since 1986, Cuddihy also has had responsibility for newsroom technology. ... At the New York Post, Barry Mechanic has been named vice president of operations; previously he had been vice president of technology and development. ... At the Journal News of White Plains (aka Gannett Suburban Newspapers), Douglas Trainor has been named vice president of systems and technology; previously he had been with the Phoenix House Foundation. He replaces Sherman Bodner, who was recently named publisher of Connecticut's Norwich Bulletin. ...

Phoenix risings: At Central Newspapers Inc. of Phoenix, Bill Toner has been named vice president; he retains his title of chief information officer. Previously Toner was with Gannett, holding a variety of roles including founding the Advanced Systems Lab. ... At the Arizona Republic, Rich Cox has been named senior vice president for operations and product management; previously he had been vice president. ... Also at the Republic, Bob Kotwasinski has been named vice president of production (he'd been production director) and Fred Dal Broi has been named director of production operations (he'd been deputy production director). ... At Central Newspapers Technology, the shared-services division of the Republic's parent company, a raft of changes: Rich Cunningham has been named director of circulation applications (he'd been technology development manager); Bob Frey has been named director of infrastructure and operations (he'd been manager); Dena Greenawalt has been named director of advertising and marketing applications (she'd been manager); John Melter has been named director of financial applications (he'd been manager); and Larry Lytle has been named manager for project planning and administration (he'd been project manager). ...

Mid-Atlantic movements: At The Sun of Baltimore, Phil Rugile has been named vice president for information technology, a new position. A veteran publishing systems technologist, Rugile's career started as an editorial assistant at Time Inc., with stops along the way at Avon, CMP, Crosfield, Cybergraphic, Cascade and, most recently, Newsday, where he was information systems director. ... At the Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va., Steve Peters has been named chief information officer not only for the paper, but for corporate parent Landmark Newspaper Group as well. Most recently Peters was with Norwest Mortgage Co. of Des Moines, Iowa. ...

Inside the insiders: At Editor & Publisher, Dennis O'Neill has been named vice president and publisher, following the venerable weekly's recent purchase by BPI Communications; previously O'Neill had been sales and marketing veep at the magazine. ... Also at E&P, Brian Steffens has resigned as the magazine's editor. ...

New media mavens: At Times Digital Co., Bruce Kyse has been named general manager of winetoday.com; previously Kyse was executive editor of the Santa Rosa (Calif.) Press-Democrat and helped start the winetoday.com site. ... At Tribune Interactive of Chicago, Dana Hayes has been named vice president of sales and marketing; previously Hayes was with Turner Broadcasting Sales Inc. ...

Vendor visitations: At ASTech of Denver, Jim Hart has been named to lead the company's consulting services; previously Hart was with the Arizona Republic, where he built the database marketing business unit. ...
