APSU in Palm Springs

The Association of Publishing Systems Users -- also known as APSU -- will hold its annual conference in Palm Springs, Calif., Sept. 12-15. The organization has announced the addition of several new supplier-interest groups that will be attending for the first time under the APSU umbrella.

In addition to Atex, supplier-specific groups include users from Agile, Autologic Information International and Unisys. Additionally, a non-supplier-specific special interest group was formed consisting of users of various business systems across the country.

To open the session, Gary Ward, publishing systems manager of The State in Columbia, S.C., and president of APSU, will introduce the new APSU and explain its relationship with the various special interest groups. The remainder of the opening day will allow the supplier-specific groups to discuss with suppliers their issues, upgrades, enhancements or general announcements.

Some of the general sessions will include "End-user Support in the Client-Server World," "The Web: Competing and Complexity of Change," "Project Management," "Managing Business Process Change," "Recruiting and Keeping Good People," " UNIX vs. NT" and "Quark XPress vs. Adobe InDesign."

General session highlights include "Vision for the Future," which will feature a roundtable discussion with Joan Herring of Advance Publications-Newhouse, Bill Hack of Central Newspapers and James Calloway of Nando.net.

In another general session, Larry Sackett, president of the Barry Group of Bethesda, Md., will discuss capturing data for marketing purposes in the session "Data Warehousing, Database Marketing and the Information Age."

New media mavens: At the New York Times and TheStreet.com, Jack Lynch has been named to head up a joint newsroom that will serve both the Times on the Web and TheStreet.com; it's scheduled to start before the end of the year. Lynch formerly was an assistant business editor at the Times and in a previous life was business editor of the San Francisco Examiner. ... Also at the Times, a new division has been established called Times Company Digital. Heading the new enterprise will be Martin Nisenholtz, chief executive (formerly head of the New York Times Electronic Media Co.). Other executives at Times Company Digital will be David Thurm (formerly vice president of production at the New York Times ) as chief operating officer; Christopher Neimeth (formerly group vice president of the New York Times Electronic Media Co.), as senior vice president, business development and strategic planning; Richard Meislin (formerly editor-in-chief of the New York Times Electronic Media Co.) as editor-in-chief; Andres Rodriguez (formerly vice president, engineering and product development of Abuzz Technologies Inc.) as general manager of Abuzz; Kenneth Richieri (formerly assistant general counsel of the New York Times Co.) as vice president and general counsel; Cristian Edwards (formerly director of business development and planning for the New York Times Electronic Media Co.) as group vice president and publisher; Lincoln Millstein (formerly vice president, new media at the Boston Globe and CEO of boston.com) as group vice president and publisher, and Muriel Watkins, (formerly director of human resources for the New York Times Co.) as vice president, human resources and communications. ... Vendor vestibules: At Corbis Sygma of New York, David Turnley has been named international executive producer; Turnley, a longtime Corbis Sygma photojournalist, has pioneered the use of photography, digital video and interviews to visually relay news stories. ... At the Cybergraphic Systems Ltd. division of Geac Publishing Systems, Lee Caratelli has been named general manager of Cybergraphic's Australian operations. Previously Caratelli was Australian R&D manager and professional services manager for Geac's SmartStream product line. He replaces Lee Silverman, who left the company. ... At Digital Technology International of Springville, Utah, Ernst-Jürgen Komberg has been named regional sales manager for Germany. Previously, Komberg was with Harris Intertype, System Integrators Deutschland and most recently with Media Systeme. ... At 5 Fifteen Ltd of the United Kingdom, Rod Fenwick has been named managing director. 5 Fifteen is a management buyout of the publishing division of the Anite Group's consultancy services; Anite Publishing's customers include BBC Publications, IPC Magazines, Emap Readerlink, Carlton Screen Advertising and Reed Business Information. Fenwick is the former vice president of marketing of Atex (Chapchal era). ... Confabs: "Advertising Sales -- the rate card of the future," will be held in Paris, France, Sept. 10. Le Parisien, France's second-largest circulation daily, has come up with a new advertising pricing policy that may shake up the way newspapers establish ad rates.
