Quick studies in designThe Society for News Design's annual "Quick Courses" have been announced. These one-day sessions provide attendees with access to top newspaper designers and graphics specialists, who provide tips and techniques as well as critiques of designs. Sessions scheduled this spring and summer include:

Also at CIMedia, Ron McCoy has been named director and chief technology officer; before a 1996 move to CIMedia, McCoy was with the Journal-Constitution, where he administered a network serving 5000 employees. ... Larry Sanders, formerly director of business operations at the Information Network, has been named vice president and general manager of USATODAY.com; Sanders is a longtime Gannett journalist, having edited the El Paso (Texas) Times and the Santa Fe (N.M.) New Mexican. Also at USATODAY.com, Jim Schulte, formerly Information Network editor, has been named vice president and editor-in-chief. Previously Schulte was editor of the Information Network and was on the start-up team of USAToday. ... Vendor vibrations: At Atex Media Solutions of Bedford, Mass., Vice President of Marketing Allen Miller moves to Sarasota, Fla., to start a new life -- not necessarily in the newspaper systems business (details to come). "I've been with Atex nearly 15 years. It's been interesting, I've learned a lot and it's been great. Everybody here has been great about me leaving," Miller said in making the announcement. Miller said Atex was weighing whether his job would be filled from someone inside the company or from outside. ... Gannett Media Technologies International Inc. of Cincinnati has announced a raft of appointments. Jeff Beard, formerly project manager for Celebro Advertising Solutions, is now director of operations for Celebro. Rebecca Bowman, formerly national account manager for Celebro, is now national account manager for DC3L System, Digital Collections. Duane Hughes, formerly director of operations for Celebro, is now director of sales and marketing for Celebro. Bill Kelley, formerly national sales manager for Digital Collections, is now its director of sales. Melissa Kroeger, formerly sales support manager for Digital Collections, is now sales and marketing support manager for Gmti. Bill Mahlock, formerly installation and support services manager for Digital Collections, is now director of installation and support services for Digital Collections. Michael Tucker, formerly marketing manager for Digital Collections, is now its director of marketing. Karen Taylor, previously the retail advertising sales manager at the Cincinnati Enquirer, is now marketing manager for Celebro Advertising Solutions. ... At Harlequin Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., Christie O'Malley has been named product marketing manager at Harlequin's Digital Printing and Publishing business unit; previously she was director of marketing for Contex Prepress Systems. O'Malley replaces Arlene Karsh, who recently left the company "to pursue other opportunities." ... At Harris Publishing Systems Corp. of Melbourne, Fla., Grady Cooper has been named editorial product manager; previously Cooper was a sales support engineer at Harris and before that had been director of systems management at California's Alameda Newspaper Group (Oakland Tribune, et al.). Also at Harris, G. Briggs Kilborne has been named vice president of marketing and strategic planning; previously Kilborne was in corporate development at Harris' parent company and before that was in finance, venture banking and consulting. ... At Real Media of New York, Charles Smith has been named to the newly created position of chief marketing officer; previously he was executive vice president and managing director of advertising sales, a position he'd held since April 1998. Before that he was a telemarketing manager for Gannett Suburban Newspapers in White Plains, N.Y. Also at Real Media, Don Perri has been named to another new position: chief operating officer and chief financial officer; previously Perri had been with Metrocorp, publisher of city and regional magazines in Boston and Philadelphia. Lastly, Bennett Zucker has been named vice president of sales; he too came from Metrocorp. ... At SoftAd of Mill Valley, Calif., John Binns has been named vice president of product development; previously Binns was with Inference Corp., served as a founding member of Expertech in the United Kingdom and worked for Computer Associates (in the United Kingdom and then in New York). ... At System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento, George Salidas has been named vice president and general manager of SII's newly formed Systems Solutions operating unit; Salidas began his career at SII in 1989 as a system engineer and has held other managerial positions in both Installation Services and Customer Services. Also at SII, Rich Caruso has been named director of the GlobalNet Customer Support Center. Before joining SII, Caruso served as the vice president of Software Labs at Sterling Software, and was the vice president of customer services for Sterling Software. ... Confabs: The American Society of Newspaper Editors meets April 13-16 in San Francisco. Highlights will include the unveiling of results from a major public opinion study of journalism credibility and a matching survey of newsroom people, part of Asne's three-year, $1 million Journalism Credibility Project. On the agenda are workshops focusing on newspaper coverage of contemporary issues and speeches from S.F. Mayor Willie Brown and actress Sharon Stone.
