Poynter picks pictures
One example of efforts to expand the Poynter Institute's reach is its support for Visual Edge '98, which will supplant the National Press Photographers Association's annual Electronic Photojournalism Workshops and Digital conferences.

Visual Edge '98 will teach working journalists and managers the technical and management skills needed to put the newest technology to practical use in their newspapers, web publications and organizations, said Kenneth Irby, the Poynter executive who brought the conference to the institute.

The week-long workshop/teaching session, with a concurrent trade show, will feature industry-standard equipment and applications as well as cutting-edge and emerging technologies. Faculty will be drawn from among the industry's most advanced users and best teachers.

The session will be held Aug. 30-Sept. 3 at Poynter, the University of South Florida and the St. Petersburg Hilton. Two tracks will be available:

  • A four-day focus on leadership in an era of change; managing workers and workflow in print and web publications; the newest digital cameras and how to use them; preparing images for reproduction in print and on line; archiving; calibration, and digital storytelling.

  • A five-day hands-on workshop where a select number of participants will use digital still and video cameras and other leading-edge technology in real-world situations to tell stories in digital media.
