October in Amsterdam

Two major European newspaper-technology meetings will be held in early October in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

IFRA 2000 Expo, sponsored by IFRA, the international newspaper technology group, and Beyond the Printed Word, co-sponsored by IFRA and the World Association of Newspapers, will be from Oct. 9-13 at Amsterdam's RAI Center.

The IFRA 2000 Expo will host more than 300 newspaper-technology exhibits, representing the leading newspaper suppliers from around the world.

In addition, there will be a series of special interest seminars, including sessions devoted to Ifra's NewsGear initiative and the International Newspaper Color Quality Club. Working titles for other sessions include "Digital Ad Technology," "ISO and Standardization," "Dynamic Strategy Modeling," "Fine Zoning" and "Print-on-Demand." The management and technology consulting group Diebold, a subsidiary of debis, will hold a free seminar titled "Mastering e-business in the newspaper industry."

The Beyond the Printed Word conference will have sessions with titles such as "All WAP [Wireless Application Protocol] or what?," "Newspaper goes radio," "Newspaper goes interactive," "The journalist on the road to multiple media," "Newspaper journalist goes TV," "One newsroom -- all media," "Print is in," "Forming alliances -- playing on your strengths," "What our customers want," "Best practice: the classified way," "Cannibalism or growth impetus?" and "The entertainment challenge."

Stephen Becker has been named vice president of field operations; previously, Becker was group vice president of studio management and before that was vice president of commercial broadband services for Cox Communications. ... Gary Mills has been named vice president of business alliances. Mills joined CIMedia as senior business manager and most recently served as group vice president, studio management. ... Chris Coda has been named director of sales, eastern region. Previously, Coda was sales manager for AccessAtlanta.com; he joined CIMedia in 1996 as a sales account executive. ... Ed Murray has been named director of network content; previously, Murray was site manager for OSO.com in Providence, R.I. and joined CIMedia in 1998. ... George deGolian, formerly general manager of CIMedia's Atlanta Internet studio, has been named southeast regional general manager. ... Keith Greer, formerly general manager of CIMedia's Southern California studios, is now western general manager. ... New media mavens: At Gannett's Central Newspapers Inc. of Phoenix, Howard Finberg has resigned. Most recently, Finberg was vice president of CNI Ventures and CNI's director of technology and information strategies; he was named a New Media Pioneer by the Newspaper Association of America in June. ... At KnightRidder.com of San Jose, Calif., Rohn Jay Miller has been named senior vice president of product and technology. Previously, Miller was with Collaborate and Ikonic. ... At the Los Angeles Times, Steven Barth has been named general manager of local interactive operations for the Times' parent company, Tribune Co. Most recently director of on-line classifieds for latimes.com, Barth was also general manager of Recycler.com and has been in the on-line business since 1984. ...

Vendor vicissitudes: At Digital Technology International of Springville, Utah, Geoff Walker has been named chief financial officer. Walker was previously the company's director of finance and operations for Europe. Ergo, Alan Kerr becomes European operations director and Steve Wright has been named sales director, taking on Kerr's old job. Also at DTI, Louise Ragone has been named director of the advertising training department; before coming to DTI in 1998, Ragone had been in ROP and classified sales as well as a newspaper production manager and ad operations manager. Further, Ray Ragone has been named director of the editorial training department; before coming to DTI in 1998, Ragone had been a newspaper reporter, editor and general manager. Lastly at DTI, Kathy Bray, who has managed DT University, has announced that she will be retiring after 14 years with the company. ... At Enfocus Software of San Mateo, Calif., Mark Atchley has been named PitStop Server product manager; previously, he was with X-Rite Inc. Susan deRepentigny has been named national accounts manager for the graphics arts marketplace; previously, she was with Gerber Scientific. Lisa Thostenson has been named enterprise and channel sales manager for North America; previously, she was with Ingram Micro. Rich Stach has been named operations manager; previously, he was with CompUSA. ... Confabs: The International Newspaper Group's annual conference will be Sept. 26-28 in Dayton, Ohio. Speakers will include Robert Eickoff of Florida's Orlando Sentinel, Shaun O'Higgens of Spokane, Wash.'s Spokesman-Review, Stan Richmond of Cox Newspapers and Doug Franklin and Mike Joseph of the Dayton Daily News.
