Adobe Systems, a graphic arts software developer based in San Jose, will offer content from Getty Images Inc. of Seattle on its web site in an exclusive two-year agreement. Customers can find, purchase and download Getty's still and motion pictures, audio clips, illustrations and clip art on Adobe's web site. An expansion from carrying Getty Images' PhotoDisc line, the Adobe.com gallery will target creative professionals for on-line distribution of art objects. Getty Images owns more than 30 million photographs and more than 15,000 hours of film in its four divisions: creative professional, press and editorial, business user and consumer. It announced acquisition of The Image Bank in September, and owns the press-oriented Allsport, Hulton Getty and Liaison Agency archives, among others. This developer of digital type technology and typefaces, based in Cambridge, Mass., has released Font Fusion, a font rasterizing engine that the company said will provide with full font fidelity and high-quality typographic output at any resolution on any device, while maintaining the integrity of the original character shapes, with low memory demands. A combination of Bitstream's TrueDoc and T2K rasterizers, Font Fusion is designed for use on everything from software and web applications to set-top boxes and continuous tone printers. The company said key features include: Compact code and small memory footprint; object-oriented architecture; support for multilingual fonts and support for multiple fonts and font formats. Another big feature: operating system and hardware independence. Font Fusion supports Macintosh, Windows, Linux, UNIX, embedded operating systems, real time operating systems, cross-platform applications and HTML applications. Font formats supported include TrueType, Type 1, CFF/Type 2, TrueDoc portable font resources (PFRs), T2K, Font Fusion stroke (FSS) format and embedded bitmaps. This Franklin Square, N.Y.-based company has announced that its MacLaunch portal site for Mac-o-philes acquired the My MacConnect launch site http://my.macconnect.com/ from Mac-centric Internet Service Provider MacConnect. The My MacConnect site will be folded into the MacLaunch site. The My MacConnect launch site combines news feeds about Apple Computer Corp. products with general interest news feeds, a Mac-topical search engine and web search tool. Chat rooms, package tracking, weather information and stock lookup functions round out the My MacConnect site. MacLaunch also features information and communications services with a Mac-twist: Mac-centric news, opinions, software updates, shopping opportunities and searchable database of Mac-related Internet sites. Chicago-based Newcity.com, a portal site linking content from young adult-oriented city and content web sites, has announced two new content partners, Ironminds.com and The Media Consortium, an on-line investigative magazine, as well as a presidential campaign coverage feature. Launched in April, the site and its 56 content and city partners comprise the Newcity Network, with 85 percent of its visitors in the 18-49 age range, the company said. Ironminds.com is a Columbia, Mo.-based on-line magazine for college students that launched Aug. 30. The University of Missouri School of Journalism is an equity partner in the venture, and its founder, Andy Wang, is a Visiting Hearst Professional at the school and former editor-in-chief for Inpressionmag.com. The site's advisory board includes writers and editors for MSNBC.com, the NEW YORK TIMES, WIRED, ROLLING STONE, SPIN and ESQUIRE. Started in November 1995 and based in Arlington, Va., The Media Consortium http://www.consortiumnews.com/, has published more than 200 investigative articles on topics underplayed in the traditional press. Its founder, Robert Parry, as a reporter for the Associated Press and NEWSWEEK magazine, covered the emerging Iran-contra scandal. An interactive feature, called "Fact Finders," encourages readers to assist in "prying loose important information being withheld by the government," the company said. Newcity.com is a subsidiary of Newcity Communications Inc., a 13-year-old Chicago media company that operates NEWCITY alternative weekly magazine and Newcity National Sales, which sells national print advertising in more than 100 alternative weeklies. SAXoTECH, a Danish publishing systems supplier with U.S. offices in Bethesda, Md., has announced the recent sale of its SAXoPRESS Content Management System to the Chronicle of Higher Education Inc. of Washington, D.C., to produce its print and on-line versions. The 175-seat editorial publishing system will include: the SAXoPRESS Editorial System, including page and photo modules and QuarkXPress Xtensions; the Automatic Image Processor to automate image preparation for web and print output; NetNews Web Publishing System to integrate newsroom and web workflow; the SAXoBRS Archiving System and the SAXoAnyWare System, which allows users to perform basic editorial functions through a web browser in-house or remotely. The 95,000-weekly CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION is the nation's leading newspaper on academic and intellectual life. The company also publishes the 40,000-biweekly CHRONICLE OF PHILANTHROPY, covering America's charitable enterprise. Installation is underway and expected to be complete within six months, the company said. The Chronicle's system, which replaces an Atex J-11 front-end, will use Windows NT servers, with MacOS pagination clients and a mix of Windows NT and Mac reporting and editing stations.
