The InDesign plug-ins are popping up, as companies rush to enhance the new layout program released just weeks ago by Adobe Systems Inc. of San Jose. Calling itself Gumption PlugWare in English, this Munich, Germany, company has created Database Publisher V1.0, which imports database information from FileMaker Pro and other tab-delimited sources into InDesign documents. Harlequin, a RIP maker based in Cambridge, Mass., signed a marketing agreement with pre-press systems developer STORM CPD GmbH, for the Harlequin ScriptWorks RIP Management System, running on Macintosh platforms from Apple Computer of Cupertino, Calif. The German pre-press supplier will use ScriptWorks in its ProofInk RIP to drive Epson color printers, including series 1520, 3000 and the six-color series 5000, 8000 and 9000. The interactive electronic arm of San Jose-based Knight Ridder rolled out four of its Real Cities hubs on the Web, BayArea.com, Miami.com, Broward.com and TwinCities.com, and its local information network centerpiece, RealCities.com. The hubs include local web directories, search, community publishing, e-commerce marketplaces, free e-mail, 24-hour national and local news, all accessible with a one-time Passport registration. Knight Ridder's on-line newspapers are also integrated into the network, as are cites where newspaper corporate partners operate. Recent partnerships include A.H. Belo Corp. of Dallas, which launched DFW.com, and Central Newspapers Inc. of Phoenix, which will roll out Real Cities hubs Phoenix.com and Indianapolis.com. Version 2.0, an add-on product to Virtual Ticket, consists of a QuarkXPress XTension and an Adobe plug-in for storing full-size preview and document information prior to archiving or off-line storage. The price for Production Pack 2.0 is $149.00 per seat, with upgrades from version 1.0 free to users who purchase at $99.00 per user before Sept. 30. The NAA, a trade group based in Vienna, Va., and Ifra, an international newspaper and media technology association based in Darmstadt, Germany, have co-produced a book showcasing the 37 winners of their latest International Newspaper Color Quality Club competition. Newspapers submit examples of their best quality color reproduction to collect points, which at a certain level earn two-year club recognition. Submissions for the next competition are due Nov. 5. Real Media Latin America has signed Miami-based print advertising rep firm Charney/Palacios & Co to help introduce advertisers to the Real Media Network and to create print and Internet advertising packages, a service the partners call Print+. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom office of Real Media has sealed a deal with Bloomberg of New York to manage advertising sales across its key European web sites in France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. With the exclusive, two-year agreement, Real Media will handle sales for the local language sites as well as traffic from those countries into Bloomberg.com. T/One, a supplier of image transmission and archiving solutions based in Quincy, Mass., has announced the installation of Merlin and Merlin Webmaster systems for digital asset management and distribution at Bloomberg News, headquartered in New York City. The Merlin System will manage Bloomberg's image archive and live photos; Webmaster makes images available to web-browser users on both intranets and the Internet. Bloomberg will use multi-CPU Compaq Proliant Server hardware. Other recent T/One installations are Merlin and Webmaster systems at the 109,000-circulation daily POST AND COURIER in Charleston, S.C., and Merlin and the TRAX Assignment Tracking System at the 90,4000-daily WINSTON-SALEM JOURNAL in North Carolina. Wavo, a digital media services provider based in Phoenix, Ariz., has partnered with the Virgin Entertainment Group of London to create a new company, JamCast.Com Inc., and Virgin JamCast, a web site that speeds downloads of MP3 and other popular digital music and games formats. Virgin JamCast's Internet broadcasts make use of Wavo's Asynchronous Reliable Multicast proprietary technology for modem and broadband users, as well as Wavo's network using the unused portion of the Public Broadcasting System television signal for TV tuner card owners.
