  • PHOTOBETTY.COM
An e-zine developed by newspaper photographers with photographs taken by and about women is growing on the Web, with the opening of a new section for single examples of photographers' work.

PhotoBetty.Com http://www.photobetty.com/, which launched in April at the Women in Photojournalism Conference, in Albany, N.Y., now boasts these areas:

-- "The Spotlight" section features work by professional and student photographers, who include an essay of "telling the stories they would tell to their friends," as well as caption information.

-- "Singles" offers just one shot per camera person, which makes it easier for more people to submit work.

-- "In Charge," conceived by and first featuring Robin Daughtridge, the CHICAGO TRIBUNE's chief photographer/picture editor, includes women in the photography business who aren't shooters themselves.

-- "Before You" highlights historical women photographers, both their work and the forces that drove them in the male-dominated field.

Inspired by the mainly pornographic URL roster returned by crawler searches for "women" and "photography" on the Internet, Stephanie Sinclair created PhotoBetty with Candice Cusic and Heather Stone, all photographers at the CHICAGO TRIBUNE.

Shots by men will be included in the site, if they represent female issues, "from the birth of a child to a fashion shoot and/or anything else in between," as Sinclair put it.

The name derives from the slang "betties," a term for girls who hang out with skaters but don't skate themselves. It was adapted to the trans-gender term "photobetties" and adopted by the founder and her colleagues while students at the INDEPENDENT FLORIDA ALLIGATOR, the school newspaper at the University of Florida.
