The MIAMI HERALD has selected OpenPages Web Content Management System from ACI of Amherst, Mass., to integrate its print and web publishing processes. The HERALD, the largest of 31 daily newspapers in the Knight Ridder group, will transfer content from its Systems Integrators Inc. front-end editorial system and wire services and originate content with the Open Pages system. ACI is on the web at http://www.aci-openpages.com/. The Cupertino, Calif.-based supplier of computer hardware and software yesterday announced the G4 model of its Power Macintosh line of computers. The company said that the new line of computers can produce 1 gigaflop -- or 1 billion floating point instructions per second -- at a minimum, with a theortical 4 gigaflop potential. The Power Mac G4 is powered by the PowerPC G4 chip designed by Apple, Motorola and IBM. It includes a new execution unit trademarked "Velocity Engine" (which was called Altivec during development). Certain applications -- Adobe's Photoshop among them -- can tap into this Velocity Engine and can run up to twice as fast as on a 600 MHz Pentium III-based personal computer. The PowerMac G4 will initially come in three models -- the 400 MHz, which is available for order now at $1499, the 450 MHz, which will ship later this month and is priced at $2499, and the 500 MHz, which is scheduled to ship in October and will be priced at $3499. The company also introduced a new computer monitor that will be sold exclusively with the G4 CPUs. The 22-inch liquid crystal display flat panel is the largest ever brought to market. Called the Cinema Display, it features a letterbox format of 1600 x 1024 pixels and 16.7 million true colors. The Cinema Display requires a digital connection only provided by a PowerMac G4, so it will be sold as a bundle with the PowerMac G4 models, with a total bundle price starting at $6498. In addition, the company said the lastest version of its Mac OS operating system, Mac OS 9, would be released in October and that the upgrade price would be $99. Apple is on the web at http://www.apple.com/. Applied Graphics Technologies Inc., a New York-based provider of outsourced digital media asset management services, and Vio Worldwide Ltd., a global file transmission network serving the graphic arts industry from headquarters in Herts, United Kingdom, announced their strategic alliance to create a global digital media asset management service Seybold Seminars, San Francisco. The M-Cast service will allow corporate brand owners and their graphic arts service providers to build, update and access a database of digital assets -- still images, illustrations, logos, videos and sound files -- efficiently and economically from anywhere in the world over Vio's secure, managed network. AGT can be visited on the Web at http://www.agt.com; Vio can be found at http://www.vio-dgn.com. More than 300 graphics industry products and services are reviewed on-line at Creaticity Expo, a user-submitted ratings system from this Boulder, Colo., company. Users can read and write reviews and assign none to five-star ratings on products in this all-hours "trade show." Launched Jan. 5, 1999, Creaticity is a web-based design, printing and publishing resource, where visitors can troubleshoot equipment and technology, find product recommendations, track down bug fixes and keep abreast of changes in the industry. The Expo and Creaticity Coffeehouse, a forum system, combine visitor knowledge with original Creaticity news and articles and manufacturer-supplied descriptions to form an information array for graphics professionals. You can wander Creaticity Expo on the web at http://www.creaticity.com/expo.html. This Miami, Fla.-based software developer has released Canvas 7, the newest version of the integrated vector illustration, image editing, web design, page layout and presentation application, in time for demonstrations at Seybold Seminars through tomorrow. This revision includes SpriteEffects technology, a way to better control applying imaging filters, and includes more than 150 innovative new features, tools, and performance enhancements, such as: -- Improved GIF and JPEG export capabilities. -- An animated GIF document type, which includes onion-skinning, frame delay settings and other effects. -- Curve editing, image editing and typography features to create or edit web banners. -- HTML export, which generates web pages complete with hyperlinks, animations, mouse-over buttons and optimized GIF or JPEG images, without need for a special plug-in or Java support. -- Built-in FTP or HTTP-protocol transfers without the use of an additional utility. -- New tools, including Reshape, Push, Auto Curve and context-sensitive snap options. -- Productivity enhancements, such as a redesigned Document Layout palette and a rotating drawing area. Canvas 7 now ships with a one-user license of Deneba Internet Graphics Server, a Canvas file and graphics assets manager, and additional connection licenses are available separately. Using any web browser, you can search for, open and view files, view indexed thumbnail pages and file properties, download files and convert files to other supported file formats. Designed to drive proofing devices, Navigator XPR runs on the iMac and NT platforms at a maximum resolution of 1440 dpi. It marks Xitron's entry into the Mac-based RIP business. It is based on Harlequin ScriptWorks technology and is initially offered to drive the Epson 1520, 3000, 5000 and 9000 models, with other proofer plugins to follow.
