  • ATEX MEDIA SOLUTIONS INC.
    Atex, a publishing systems supplier based in Bedford, Mass., has announced the recent sale of its advertising solutions to the 267,000-circulation O GLOBO of Rio de Janeiro and its companion paper, the 263,000-circulation EXTRA.

    Atex will provide its Enterprise Ad Producer, Architect for Windows NT, Classified Pagination, Logo Manager, Logo Retriever and Space Reservation products. Atex will integrate them with advertising management solutions from SAP Inc. of Germany. Installation of the 200-seat system began in April.

    CCI, a Danish publishing systems supplier with U.S. offices in Kennesaw, Ga., has announced that database maker Oracle of Redwood Shores, Calif., has made CCI a certified solution partner. The certification will allow CCI greater access to Oracle technology and technical support.

  • ECRM
    ECRM, an imaging devices supplier based in Tewksbury, Mass., has introduced an enhanced version of its StingRay 6300 high-speed wide-format imagesetter. The new model, the 6300HS, can image on three media: film, paper and polyester plates.

    Media width can be as wide as 25-inches, with resolutions from 1000 dpi to 2540 dpi. The 6300HS features output of one page every 45 seconds, with optional head and tail punches, and an optional feed to an automatic platemaker.

  • HARLEQUIN GROUP
    Harlequin, an imaging software supplier based in Cambridge, England, has been acquired by Global Graphics of Pompey, France. The acquisition, valued at US$18.4 million, was completed July 12, six days after Harlequin was forced into receivership.

    Global Graphics, a supplier of plate processing equipment for the graphic arts industry, has said it will operate Harlequin as a separate unit, retaining many of some 140 employees in the United States and the United Kingdom while creating a new management structure.

  • INFORMATION PRESENTATION TECHNOLOGIES
    IPTech, a supplier of production management software based in San Luis Obispo, Calif., has announced that its ImpozeIt page imposition software now supports Adobe Acrobat 4.0, providing full workflow using Portable Document Format (PDF) files.

  • MACROMEDIA INC.
    San Francisco-based Macromedia, the maker of the Dreamweaver web authoring tool, has announced that it will acquire Elemental Software, which makes e-commerce products such as Drumbeat 2000 and eStore Builder.

    Macromedia will exchange 625,000 shares, worth about $24 million, for all outstanding equity in Elemental Software. The deal is expected to be completed in 45 days.

  • NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
    The industry trade group based in Vienna, Va., is preparing for CONNECTIONS '99, a four-day exploration of electronic media planned for July 15-18 at the Chicago Hilton and Towers.

    Scheduled speakers include Guy Kawasaki, CEO of garage.com of Palo Alto, Calif., who will discuss revolutionary ways to market ideas, products and services. A roundtable discussion about print-new media links will feature analysts and industry executives; later 30-minute roundtables will address 14 topics, from developing a business model you can live with to closing the on-line sale.

  • 3M
    3M, the St. Paul, Minn.-based diversified manufacturer, has introduced a new, fast way to use its Post-it Note sticky notes as an advertising medium for newspapers.

    Working with such companies as Hurletron Inc., Kirk-Rudy and GSP Inc., 3M has devised a way to attach Post-it Notes to newspapers, either on the press (on one or more pages, at 80,000 an hour) or at the stacker.

  • WIECK PHOTO DATABASE INC.
    Wieck, the Dallas-based provider of photos and image distribution services on-line, has announced that it will create and operate an ImageLink service for Canon USA, the maker of electronics products for consumers and businesses.

    Beginning this fall, Wieck will host an image database of Canon products, plant locations and executive portraits. Publications will have access to the print-ready images, and over time Wieck will add video-on-demand components as well.

    The deal with Canon follows Wieck's June announcement that it would be expanding its similar services for Toyota North America, which has been an ImageLink customer since 1997. Wieck also distributes image and text files for the NEW YORK TIMES syndicate and new service, as well as Agence France-Presse and the Japanese news service, Kyodo.
