  • NEWSINC.
How vital are vital statistics? Some newspapers charge to print them, raising questions about community service versus profit considerations, writes NEWSINC. Editor-Publisher David M. Cole in the July 5 issue. With obit writing a fading art, Cole wonders about the wisdom of charging readers to carry what has long been news.

Inside, Correspondent Julius Duscha explores trends in how to handle obits, wedding announcements, births and divorces. Some papers charge for some items but not others -- and some have policies by category of information.

Also inside, Senior Editor Pete Wetmore looks at the whys and wherefores of double-digit percentage increases in national ad linage and revenues, talks with key people at dfw.com, sees a significant benefit coming from the development of asset management systems and scans three disparate ways newspapers are marketing themselves these days.
