  • ASSOCIATION OF PUBLISHING SYSTEMS USERS
    APSU, a users group which includes members of the old Atex Newspaper Users Group, is offering a $100 discount to anyone who registers by July 5 to attend APSU's fall meeting.

    The discount rate of $400 provides meals and access to about 50 general and supplier-specific APSU sessions to be held Sept. 12-15 in Palm Springs, Calif. Users will include sites using products from Atex Media Solutions, Agile Enterprise, Unisys Corp., Autologic Information International Inc. and popular business systems.

  • AGFA CORP.
    Agfa, an imaging devices manufacturer based in Ridgefield Park, N.J., and Monotype Typography Inc. of Chicago have jointly released Creative Alliance v. 9.0, a collection of 650 PostScript and TrueType fonts created by more than 100 font designers and foundries around the world.

    The latest entry in the series increases the font library to more than 7000 faces for the Mac and Windows operating systems. Version 9.0 has seven categories of fonts, including ones exclusive to the series plus the Monotype Classics Library, Adobe Type Collection, ITC Typeface Library and others.

  • CAREERPATH.COM
    CareerPath.com, a Los Angeles-based on-line recruitment site owned by and operated for newspapers, has announced that it has contracted with Webhire Inc. of Lexington, Mass., to join the Webhire Network of Internet job sites, use Webhire's JobPost technology to collect and post job openings from web sites and use Webhire's JobCanopy search tool.

    Other Webhire clients drawing on Webhire Network's weekly supply of 120,000 openings include Monster.com and Black Voices. Webhire's largest investor is Amazon.com, which recently sold Webhire the technology needed to gather listings on-line.

  • DIGITAL ART EXCHANGE INC.
    DAX, a Boston-based provider of Internet services to the graphic arts industry, has expanded the features offered through its iSeries. The new features include an additional e-mail address, 50-megabytes of on-line space for hosting traffic, and a 50-megabyte digital drop box using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) for distribution of large files.

    The FTP sites offer multiple folders, so that more than one client can drop off digital files into a secure location at any time.

    FutureTense, a provider of web publishing tools based in Acton, Mass., has introduced the FutureTense Business Partner Program through which other suppliers and integrators may include FutureTense's Internet Publishing System as part of their offerings.

  • HARRIS PUBLISHING SYSTEMS CORP.
    The Melbourne, Fla.-based supplier of editorial and classified systems has announced that it has purchased the intellectual property of Total Systems Engineering Inc. of Louisville, Ky.

    Harris cited Total Systems' MAXWorkFlow System -- a "next-generation, customizable, drag-and-drop output manager" which includes an Open Pre-press Interface (OPI) built into the raster image processor (RIP) -- as the product that Harris will immediately bring to market.

    San Jose-based Knight Ridder will sponsor a new media training session, "Building New Media Skills from A to Z," at UNITY '99, the joint convention of four associations of minority journalists -- the National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Asian American Journalists Association and Native American Journalists Association -- to be held July 7-10 in Seattle.

  • NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
    A survey by the NAA, the newspaper industry trade association based in Vienna, Va., has found that newspapers plan to spend as much as $700 million on equipment in 1999, up from about $500 million in 1998.

    The survey drew responses from 190 newspapers. It showed that on a per-thousand circulation basis, expenditures will rise 24 percent, to more than $41,000. Purchases, actual and projected, were planned for presses, buildings and office equipment. On a dollar basis, the greatest expenditures were planned fro construction ($148.5 million), followed by computer hardware ($98.6 million), software ($66.6 million) and presses ($94.2 million).

  • NIKON INC.
    Nikon, a Japanese maker of film and digital cameras, has introduced the D1, a single-lens reflex digital camera with enhanced image quality and fast operation. The camera has a 23.7-by-15.6-mm CCD for image capture, three exposure metering systems and three auto exposure modes.

    The D1 can capture 4.5 frames per second to a total of 21 images; maximum shutter speed is 1/16,000 of a second. Display is through a two-inch LCD monitor. Suggested retail price is $5580, with cameras available "by the end of September 1999."

  • PUBLISHING PARTNERS INTERNATIONAL
    PPI, a supplier of advertising solutions based in Bedford, N.H., has announced the recent sale of its AD2000 advertising system to the 395,000-circulation PLAIN DEALER of Cleveland.

    The 135-seat system includes Windows NT workstations running to UNIX-based Compaq Alpha ES 40 servers with Oracle databases. Replacing a legacy CSI system, PPI will take ad orders for classified, ROP and classified display ads. Features include an interface to the paper's business systems.
