Jackpot -- that's what newspaper technologists have in store when they arrive in Las Vegas for NEXPO '99, the annual trade show and conference sponsored by the Newspaper Association of America, writes COLE PAPERS Editor & Publisher David M. Cole. NEXPO, which this year will run Monday-Thursday, June 14-17, will feature three new editorial front-end systems from Atex Media Solutions, Digital Technology International and System Integrators Inc. The systems, Cole says in the annual NEXPO preview issue of THE COLE PAPERS, herald the ebbing of the Fourth Wave and the arrival of the Fifth Wave -- a mix of proprietary-like software with the best applications available. Inside the June issue, Cole offers his 60 top pre-press booths to visit, along with the seven best booths on the show floor. The centerspread of the issue is a color map of the Las Vegas Convention Center show floor, indicating where major exhibitors are located and how to find the 60 top booths listed in THE COLE PAPERS. Overseas, SCC recently installed its MediaServer package at the 89,000-circulation SHEFFIELD STAR in England. The paper will use MediaServer as a production database for photos, and as an archive for images and text. Two other British papers, the 50,000-circulation LANCASHIRE EVENING POST and 103,000-circulation YORKSHIRE EVENING POST, recently upgraded their SCC 18-month-old installations.
