The decision by the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE to assess its future sets the stage for its sale, writes NEWSINC. Editor-Publisher David M. Cole in the May 24 issue of NEWSINC. The City by the Bay may be entering its last days as a two-newspaper town as the families who own the CHRONICLE may be on the way to finally settling their disputes -- and capitalizing on the current high prices newspapers are fetching, Cole writes. Inside, Senior Editor Pete Wetmore talks with circulation managers of five papers that have gained circulation in the last year, examines a Thomson Newspapers plan to train new newsroom staffers culled from communities in which it publishes, and interviews Mary Junck on her upcoming transition to Lee Enterprises Inc. as chief operating officer. Also inside, Correspondent L. Carol Christopher reports on a conference of businesses, including a handful of newspapers, that are developing virtual communities. Christopher finds that the concept could be a springboard to such things as e-commerce, but there are perils.
