    AGT, the Rochester, N.Y.-based provider of outsourcing services to newspapers, has announced it will lay off about 10 percent of its work force in the wake of a $4.2 million loss in the fourth quarter of 1998. AGT has already closed 11 facilities in metro New York and the Midwest.

    Cybergraphic, an Australian publishing systems supplier with U.S. offices in Burlington, Mass., has announced the sale of its Genera advertising and editorial systems to the 15,000-circulation evening WALLA WALLA (Wash.) UNION-BULLETIN.

    The system includes two CyberCla$$Page classified pagination workstations, five CyberPage editorial page layout seats, 20 CyberNews reporter workstations and CyberOPI, Cybergraphics' Open Pre-press Interface. It replaces a proprietary system from Dewar Information Systems Corp.

    Edgil, a supplier of advertising and business solutions based in Chelmsford, Mass., has announced the recent sale of its Ads to Go on-line display ad software to the PROVIDENCE (R.I.) JOURNAL. Windows NT-based Ads to Go breaks print display classified ads into searchable on-line ads while preserving advertisers' logos and associating them with the text on-line.

    Infonautics, a provider of on-line services based in Wayne, Pa., has announced three new customers for its e-commerce and on-line archive services. The new customers are EDITOR & PUBLISHER, the weekly magazine about the newspaper industry; the MORNING CALL in Allentown, Pa., and Media General of Richmond, Va., which owns newspapers and television stations in the Southeast.

    Infonautics also announced the introduction of an enhanced archiving product line, enabling publishers to track usage, bill directly on-line and customize their use of Infonautics services.

    KOZ.com, a provider of community publishing tools based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., has announced that it has signed a letter of intent to buy the ichat line of chat, instant messaging and bulletin board products from Acuity Corp. of Austin, Texas. The purchase will give KOZ.com access to 2100 corporate clients, 500,000 consumers and a database of more than two million e-mail addresses.

    SII, a publishing systems supplier based in Sacramento, has announced two recent sales to established SII sites.

    In New York, the 237,000-circulation all-day BUFFALO NEWS has ordered a total system -- advertising, editorial and pagination. The purchase includes 16 Coyote page layout workstations, DualSCOOP OPI router and the Page Director Ad Layout System from Managing Editor Inc. of Jenkintown, Pa.

    In Oklahoma, the 168,000-circulation TULSA WORLD has ordered a classified advertising solution, including 50 Coyote XA workstations and System/77 with ServerNet technology. Installation will begin in March.

  • THOMSON INTERACTIVE MEDIA
    Thomson, a provider of on-line advertising solutions based in Stamford, Conn., has announced the recent sale of its Classified IQ search engine to the 183,000-circulation AUSTIN (Texas) AMERICAN-STATESMAN. The Cox Enterprises newspaper also will have access to Thomson's Encore, a web site development tool, and Directory Express, a listings generator.

  • ZIP2 CORP.
    Zip2, a supplier of on-line publishing solutions based in Mountain View, Calif., has announced the signing of a four-year, multimillion-dollar deal to provide technology and services to the Mirror Group newspaper publishing company, which is based in the United Kingdom.

    Under the contract, Zip2 will create four portal web sites using its Homebase e-commerce tools. Zip2 is in the process of being acquired by AltaVista Co., a web portal company that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Compaq Computer Corp. of Houston.
