  • NEWSINC.
The newspaper industry has discovered how to go along to get a lot, writes NEWSINC. Editor/Publisher David M. Cole in the Feb. 15 issue. Recent cooperation among newspaper companies in on-line acquisitions and distribution agreements mirror the "co-opetition" found in other industries.

Inside, another example of co-opetition is detailed by Senior Editor Pete Wetmore, who writes that the plan for the SEATTLE TIMES to shift to mornings and compete head-to-head with the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER could in fact be a win-win situation for all involved. Wetmore also details another case of co-opetition between the LOS ANGELES TIMES and MediaNews Group, presents more earnings reports from multimedia companies for the fourth quarter and all of 1998 and talks with a couple of analysts about prospects for 1999

Correspondent Julius Duscha attends the Western Conference of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, where he finds change brought about by the maturity of age and economic reality.
