AII, an imaging device manufacturer and output systems supplier based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has announced the recent installation of its equipment in Don Mills, Ontario, to produce the start-up national newspaper the NATIONAL POST by Southam Inc. of Toronto.

The installation, undertaken in the four months between the formation of the NATIONAL POST last summer and its introduction last fall, includes three APS GRAFIX RIPs and APS RIP to Local Area Network kits, as well as proofers, two APSCOM send units, a controller and a 32-port hub. The center in Don Mills, a suburb of Toronto, generates pages for the nationally distributed newspaper which are transmitted to nine printing sites across Canada.

Each remote production site uses two of AII's APSCOM receive units, an APS 2500 color proofer, a 32-port hub and one or two APS 3850 laser imagers with media transports to speed processing.

To further the use of XML and Java, Bluestone is giving away XwingML, a package that assists in learning how to use XML and Java-based applications in tandem. With XwingML, users can create a Graphical User Interface in Java without knowing how to write Java code directly.

Cox Ohio also uses other Edgil products for employment ads, generating revenue through enhancements to the web site, automated query tools and a statistical report generator.

  • NEWSINC.
The purchase of AdOne by a newspaper consortium shows wisdom, even if it's overdue, writes NEWSINC. Editor/Publisher David M. Cole in the newsletter's Feb. 1 issue. The move to acquire AdOne by five newspaper-publishing companies signals the industry's turnaround in cooperation since the failure of New Century Network and provides a strong presence on the Web to newspapers not in major markets, Cole writes.

Inside the Feb. 1 issue, Senior Editor Pete Wetmore talks with two of the companies involved in the AdOne deal. Wetmore also writes about the impact analyst estimates have on companies, describes how covering the shortened NBA season will affect several sports desks and rounds up earnings reports for the fourth quarter and 1998.

Correspondent Julius Duscha details the highs and lows of editorial writing in an era of diminished resources. Duscha talks with editorial page staffers at several newspapers, large and small, to find that the editorial and op-ed pages are not the darlings of publishers when it comes to budgeting their resources.
