    Bitstream, an publishing systems supplier based in Cambridge, Mass., has announced plans to develop a driver for its on-demand publishing system, PageFlex, to connect in Scitex VPS format to Scitex devices including the SX3000 DEF, and beyond them short-run color output devices from Xerox Corp. of Stamford, Conn.

  • CANTO SOFTWARE
    San Francisco-based Canto, a supplier of digital asset management tools, has announced that its primary product, the Cumulus Network server, now supports the new Apple OS X server from Apple Computer Inc. of Cupertino, Calif. Apple OS X combines features of the Macintosh OS and UNIX.

    The updated Canto Cumulus software will run faster on OS X, and web access is enhanced through OS X's direct connectivity via a Common Gateway Interface rather than a layer of web server application software. The Cumulus-OS X compliance also will give users support for Mac and Windows clients, AppleScript support and remote administration of servers from client workstations.

    Harlequin, an imaging solutions supplier based in Cambridge, Mass., has announced that its OEM partners now can begin implementing ScriptWorks 5.0, Harlequin's RIP Management System.

    More than 50 partners will be able to include Version 5.0 in their configurations, adding PostScript LanguageLevel 3 capability and new Harlequin tools for color handling. The new Raster Image Processor (RIP) can import data from any color system, and can image gradient fills more quickly by matching entries in its pattern library with the resolution of the target device.

    Imaging Technologies (ITEC), a supplier of color image-handling solutions based in San Diego, has introduced a lower-cost, ICC-and-ColorSync compatible color matching package.

    Priced at less than $1000, the new ColorBlind Matchbox combines ITEC's color management software with a color measuring instrument from Color Savvy Systems of Springboro, Ohio. The package enables users to set up device-specific color production profiles and calibrate colors for consistent viewing and output.

  • PUBLISHING PARTNERS INTERNATIONAL
    PPI, an advertising systems supplier based in Bedford, N.H., has announced the recent sale of its AD2000 advertising system to the 300,000-circulation MANILA BULLETIN in the Philippines.

    The 50-seat installation will be distributed over six sites, with 30 seats in the main office and the other 20 at five remote sites. When installation is completed in September, Windows NT servers will be DEC Alpha 4100 clusters connected over leased lines. The PPI system, which will replace an Atex IAS system, will interface to third-party applications for pagination.

    Sacramento-based SII, a supplier of multimedia publishing solutions, has announced two recent sales.

    The 267,000-circulation ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS in Minnesota has ordered Compaq/Tandem ServerNet technology and System/77 for editorial and classified. The Knight Ridder paper runs more than 100 Coyote/3 clients in news and advertising.

    Singapore Press Holdings, which publishes 11 newspapers including the STRAITS TIMES of Singapore, is adding ServerNet and System/77 pagination to its current 600-seat editorial and advertising system. The STRAITS TIMES will be able to farm out editing and layout tasks to a service bureau in Sydney, Australia, which will send full digital pages to Singapore for output and printing.

  • TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
    Chicago-based TMS, a multimedia content provider and a unit of the Tribune Co. of Chicago, has announced that it is now the exclusive supplier of weather to all 24 daily newspapers owned by Journal Register Co. of Trenton, N.J.

    TMS will provide each paper with customized presentations of weather data. The deal includes promotion of the weather pages by The Weather Channel in markets with Journal Register papers.
