Baseview, a publishing systems supplier based in Ann Arbor, Mich., and a unit of Harris Publishing Systems Corp. of Melbourne, Fla., has announced that 61 sites received its services during October. Among them were THE COURIER (14k, morning) of Russellville, Ark., which installed six workstations using Baseview's circulation software, and THE NEWS-MESSENGER (14k, evening) of Fremont, Ohio, which now is using Baseview's AdManagerPro advertising solution on seven workstations. New York-based DeskNet, a software developer working to enhance connectivity between off-the-shelf and other software, has announced APS-MediaBank, which links Inso Corp.'s MediaBank digital asset manager and Quark Publishing System and Quark XPress, products of Denver-based Quark Inc. Boston-based Inso's MediaBank is linked to QPS via DeskNetAPS to facilitate data sharing, bridging gaps between applications that heretofore did not communicate. Infonautics, a web-based provider of news and other information based in Wayne, Pa., has introduced a fee-based text archive on the Web in conjunction with New York-based Associated Press. The AP's on-line service, The WIRE, is the entry point to the Infonautics system, which contains AP stories dating to July 1, 1997. Stories two weeks old or less may be accessed free through The WIRE. Infonautics is on the Web at http://www.infonautics.com/. The AP is available through web sites operated by more than 250 AP clients across the country. Mactive, a publishing solutions supplier based in Melbourne, Fla., has announced the recent sale of its AdBase ad system to Pioneer Newspapers Inc. of Glenview, Ill., publishers of 48 weekly papers in the Chicago area with paid total circulation of more than 212,000. The system includes a Sun Microsystems server running an Oracle database to Windows NT clients. It will provide ad order entry for retail, classified and pre-print advertising, as well as page layout and pagination. Mactive is on the Web at http://www.mactiveinc.com/. Oracle, a database environment supplier based in Redwood Shores, Calif., has announced the sale of its Web Requisitions purchasing system to the San Francisco Newspaper Agency, which provides business services to the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE (475k, morning) and SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER (113k, evening). Oracle's web-based system will permit about 200 agency employees to enter and route requisitions using a web browser. The agency replaced a paper-based system used to handle about 1000 requisitions a month in about 90 days. Oracle is on the Web at http://www.oracle.com/. PPI, an advertising solutions supplier based in Bedford, N.H., has announced the recent sale of its AD2000 advertising system to the Maryland Pennysaver Group of Hanover, Md. The group publishes 57 weeklies with a combined circulation exceeding 900,000. The 77-user system includes classified and run-of-paper ad order entry, billing and receivables. The system uses off-the-shelf software, including Microsoft Word and Excel. PPI is on the Web at http://www.ppius.com/. TVData, a supplier of television listings services based in Glens Falls, N.Y., has introduced TVData ON-SCREEN, a TV guide that local cable operators may brand with their own identities and use as a vehicle for local advertising. Seattle-based Union-Street.com, a start-up company founded in July, has announced that it is working to develop remote publishing systems for that will include tools for creating web sites, user-based calendar management, forums and chats. Union-Street.com was founded by Edward Petersen and Michael Grunder, former executives with Zip2 Corp. of Mountain View, Calif., and Pantheon Inc. of Seattle, which Zip2 acquired earlier this year.
