  • APPLE COMPUTER INC.
    Apple, the Cupertino, Calif.-based maker of the Macintosh line of personal computers for the graphic arts industry, has announced that beginning in November, the 292-store, Minneapolis-based Best Buy Co. home electronics store chain will begin selling the iMac, Apple's consumer-oriented G3-based computer.

    Apple also announced sales of more than 40,000 iMacs in Japan since the machine went on the market Aug. 29. Apple executives said 40 percent of the buyers had not owned Apples before, and another 14 percent were switching from Microsoft Windows to the Mac OS.

  • AUTOLOGIC INFORMATION INTERNATIONAL
    AII, an imaging device supplier based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has announced it received more than two dozen orders for APS 3850 Color Laser Imagers during August.

    Among the purchasers were THE NEWS-GAZETTE (45k, all day) of Champaign, Ill.; Philadelphia Newspapers, publishers of the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER (433k, morning) and PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS (179k, morning), and the VIRGIN ISLANDS DAILY NEWS (16k, morning).

    Baseview, a subsidiary of Harris Publishing Systems Corp. based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has announced its August and September sales. Among them are the installation of a 57-seat NewsEditPro IQue editorial system at the MARIN INDEPENDENT (41k, evening) of Novato, Calif., which also features 22 pagination stations, and a 29-seat editorial system at the LORAIN (Ohio) MORNING JOURNAL (44k, morning) with 12 pagination workstations.

    CompuText, an advertising systems supplier based in Houston, has announced that Cia T. Janer of Rio de Janeiro is now the Brazilian distributor of the CompuClass 5.2 advertising system.

  • GANNETT MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES INTERNATIONAL
    GMTI, an archiving solutions supplier based in Cincinnati, has announced it has completed installation of its Digital Collections DC3 digital asset management solution at FOLHA DE SAO PAULO (286k, morning) in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

    The 250-seat system handles all pre-press photo workflow, drawing from three photo wire services and staff photographers, as well as text from 14 news services and archived copy.

  • IPA SYSTEMS LTD.
    London-based IPA, a publishing solutions supplier, has announced that the number of its q-Edit editorial workstations in use has surpassed 4000.

    The milestone was reached with the upgrade of the IPA system at BORSEN (42k, morning), a financial daily based in Copenhagen, Denmark. BORSEN has 120 Macintosh workstations in its newsroom and 25 remote workstations, all connected to an NT server running Microsoft SQL.

  • MORRIS COMMUNICATIONS CORP.
    Morris, a newspaper publisher based in Augusta, Ga., has announced that it has terminated a working arrangement with SAXoTECH A/S of Aalborg, Denmark.

    Under the agreement announced in December, Morris was to test the SAXoPRESS editorial system made by SAXoTECH and consider becoming the U.S. distributor of the system. Changing business needs were cited for ending the relationship.


  • MULTI-AD SERVICES INC.
    Multi-Ad, an advertising solutions supplier based in Peoria, Ill., will display a beta version of Creator2 Version 1.5, its display ad makeup application, at Graph Expo in Chicago, according to MACWEEK and EMEDIAWEEKLY.

    When it is released in January, Creator2 Version 1.5 for the Mac will cost $895. It will feature ColorSync 2.5 support, enhanced integration of AppleScript and expanded text editing capabilities for dropped cap letters and text scaling.

  • SOFTWARE CONSULTING SERVICES
    SCS, a publishing solutions supplier based in Nazareth, Pa., has announced three recent sales:

    -- INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY (300k, morning) of Los Angeles has purchased an advertising system that includes AdMAX/Retail for order entry and financial data storage, plus Layout-8000, AdMAX/Classified and SCS/ClassPag for pagination.

    -- Lehman Communications Corp. of Longmont, Colo., has acquired editorial and advertising systems for two of its Colorado dailies. The DAILY TIMES-CALL (20k, evening) of Longmont will install a 56-seat GoodNews editorial system, while the DAILY REPORTER-HERALD (17k, evening) of Loveland will have 39 GoodNews workstations. Both papers also are getting Tark archiving systems as well as SCS/ClassPag and AdMAX/Classified.

    -- The KINGSPORT (Tenn.) TIMES-NEWS (45k, all day) has bought a 50-seat GoodNews editorial system which also includes 20 laptop computers for remote writing and editing as well as work in the newsroom.

  • UNISYS CORP.
    Unisys, a publishing systems supplier based in Blue Bell, Pa., has announced that its customer base has hit 100 newspapers in 11 countries with the recent sale of its editorial products to NORDKURIER (159k, morning) of Neubrandenburg, Germany.

    The system will include 130 seats running Hermes, the Unisys publishing module, and WireCenter, the wire service router module, on dual IBM AIX servers.
