Atex, a publishing systems supplier based in Bedford, Mass., has released its Windows NT-based version of Architect, software for planning and building editions of a newspaper. Previous versions of Architect had been UNIX-based. The new version features automatic renumbering of pages within a publication plan. Tight links to the Quark XPress page layout program include the ability to draw rules around ad stacks using a Quark XTension. Atex also has announced the sale of its Enterprise advertising system and Prestige editorial system to Zimbabwe Newspapers Ltd. in Harare, Zimbabwe. The 85-seat editorial and 37-seat advertising systems will serve one weekly and two daily newspapers with a combined circulation of more than 200,000. New York-based Auction Universe, an on-line auction enterprise and a subsidiary of Times Mirror Co. of Los Angeles, has introduced Bid$afe, a transaction intermediary that promises to eliminate fraud in auction exchanges as well as provide insurance protection for purchased items if they are damaged in transit. Bid$afe will provide a money-back guarantee as it serves as the intermediary on all transactions made with Visa, MasterCard and Discover credit cards. It will assure sellers they will be paid, and buyers that they have recourse if they are unsatisfied with a purchase. Insurance for items in transit will be provided by Pacific Insurance Co. Ltd. Harris, the Melbourne, Fla.-based diversified enterprise whose subsidiaries include Harris Publishing Systems Corp., has introduced a new logo and image campaign. Building on a slogan of "next level solutions," Harris has introduced a logo in stylized black and red letters, replacing one used since 1974. Konica, an imaging devices supplier based in Glen Cove, N.Y., has introduced two wide-format capstan imagesetters, the EV-jetsetter 7100 and EV-jetsetter 8100. Designed for four-up and eight-up commercial work as well as double-truck newspaper production, both devices offer 3556-dot-per-inch resolution. The 8100 is the market's widest capstan-driven imagesetter, at 25-inches wide; the 7100 can image up to 20.5-inches. Both can image at up to 32-inches-per-minute at 1000 dpi, and offer head-and-tail punches. Konica is on the Web at http://www.konica.com/. Monaco, a supplier of color management and workflow automation tools based in Andover, Mass., has announced that its technology has been licensed by Xerox Engineering Systems, a subsidiary of Xerox Corp. based in East Rochester, N.Y. Xerox Engineering Systems will use Monaco products in its Xerox 8900 Series II printer. Included are color rendering dictionaries Monaco has created specifically for the printer, which is a wide-format device used in engineering and graphic arts applications. Monotype, an imaging systems supplier based in Rolling Meadows, Ill., has announced more than 30 recent sales of its RIPs, image recorders, proofers and spoolers. Among the customers from the United States, Brazil and Canada were the WICHITA (Kan.) EAGLE (90k, morning), which bought three Sun RIPExpress raster image processors and color and black-and-white proofers; the COLUMBUS (Ohio) DISPATCH (250k, morning), which acquired dual NewsExpress imagesetters driven by four Sun RIPExpresses, and the PROVIDENCE (R.I.) JOURNAL (167k, all day), which will install Sun RIPExpresses interfaced to a Futuro drum recorder and full-page ProofExpress. Monotype is on the Web at http://www.monoexpress.com/. Nova, a subsidiary of AISI Inc. based in Auburn, Calif., has announced the sale of a System Integrators Inc. Coyote XA advertising system to THE COURIER-NEWS (45k, morning) of Bridgewater, N.J. The sale to the Gannett Co. Inc. newspaper is the first under a marketing agreement between SII and Nova. Nova is on the Web is at http://www.novapub.com/. SII, a publishing systems supplier based in Sacramento, has announced it has shipped its Coyote XE editorial client software for Windows to two newspapers, the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE (490k, morning) and the MIAMI HERALD (328k, morning). Both long-time SII sites, the CHRONICLE ordered 250 licenses and the HERALD 220. SII is on the Web at http://www.sii.com/. Users of systems made by Sacramento-based SII will gather Oct. 25-28 at the Biscayne Bay Marriott Hotel and Marina in Miami to meet with SII representatives, attend workshops and tour the host newspaper, the MIAMI HERALD. Workshops will focus on how-to tutorials about enhancing system performance (and saving company money in the bargain). SII will display new features in its Coyote product line, including Coyote Layout. Suppliers other than SII also will show their wares. Registration is $200 and the deadline to register is Oct. 3. TrendWatch, a monitor of developments in the graphic arts and publishing industries based in Harrisville, R.I., has found in a recent survey that publishers are showing much more interest in buying digital cameras this year than last. Publishers reported a nearly 1000 percent increase in plans to purchase digital cameras costing less than $10,000. Second in interest in this price range were commercial photographers, planning to buy 179 percent cameras this year; corporate designers, 142 percent; catalog publishers, 139 percent, and advertising agencies, 76 percent.
