  • ADQUEST CLASSIFIED
    AdQuest, an on-line aggregator of newspaper classified ads based in Waupaca, Wis., has announced it has merged with PowerAdz.com of Troy, N.Y., creating one of the largest providers of Internet-based classified ad services to newspapers. PowerAdz.com also said it had acquired $4.5 million in equity financing, with plans to add 30 new employees by year's end.

    AdQuest also announced the signing of its 600th client newspaper, which it did not identify. AdQuest takes in ads from its client newspapers, then aggregates them for retrieval by location on each paper's site.

    The subsidiary of Journal Communications Inc. of Milwaukee, publishers of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, said the 600 newspapers together publish 120,000 classifieds on the World-Wide Web daily.

  • APPLE COMPUTER INC.
    Apple, the Cupertino, Calif.-based maker of the Mac OS, has introduced new servers and cut prices on older models of servers and PowerBook notebook computers.

    The new 333-megahertz G3-based server features AppleShare IP 6 software, allowing one administrative console to handle either Mac or Windows clients. The new server is priced at $4599, while the older, 300-megahertz model has been reduced to $2999.

    The price of a 233-megahertz PowerBook with a 14-inch screen has been cut to $2799 as Apple introduced new high-end PowerBooks with 300-megahertz processors and real time video playback.

  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    Baseview, a publishing solutions supplier based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has announced scores of recent sales and installations.

    In May, the subsidiary of Harris Publishing Systems Corp. of Melbourne, Fla., worked with 49 sites. Among them was the YAKIMA (Wash.) HERALD-REPUBLIC (41k, morning), which installed 52 NewsEditPro IQue workstations, including 19 for pagination.

    In June, work at 41 sites included the installation of advertising and editorial software at the PINE BLUFF (Ark.) COMMERCIAL (18k, morning). The Donrey Media Group property put in five AdManagerPro workstations for classified, 27 NewsEditPro IQue editing seats and 12 pagination seats.

    In July, Baseview worked with a record 61 sites. The major installation of the month was at ESPN MAGAZINE in New York, where 37 editorial seats were installed.

  • LEXIS-NEXIS
    LEXIS-NEXIS, a provider of on-line information and publishing solutions based in Dayton, Ohio, has announced that products developed by Tribune Solutions of Salt Lake City, are now being offered through Reed Technology and Information Services Inc. of Horsham, Pa. These products include NewsView, PhotoView and Connections32.

    Reed Technology, which is an operating unit of LEXIS-NEXIS, is on the Web at http://www.reedtech.com/.

    LEXIS-NEXIS, which is on the Web at http://www.lexis-nexis.com/, also announced that it now offers access to the Associated Press State Wire archive. The archive, which draws from 143 U.S. AP bureaus plus the news co-op's print and broadcast members, is updated with new content 24 hours after it is distributed to U.S. newspapers.


  • PROIMAGE AMERICA INC.
    ProImage, a supplier of workflow management tools based in North Andover, Mass., whose global headquarters are in Or-Akiva, Israel, has released NewsWay version 2.5, an upgrade to ProImage's pre-press production workflow solution. NewsWay monitors and directs digital traffic en route to RIPs and output devices.

    Version 2.5 features improved load balancing, input of Portable Document Format (PDF) files in native format, a digital "loupe" which can examine individual printing dots, and NewsWay Impose, which will take in multiple page files and "stitch" them together before imaging a flat of pages.

    ProImage also announced that the DAILY TELEGRAPH (1m, morning) in London had chosen NewsWay for its production facility at Canary Wharf in London.

  • QUARK INC.
    Denver-based Quark has announced the beta release of two new XTensions which registered users of Quark XPress may download free from the Quark web site, http://www.quark.com/.

    One product, a filter for files using the Portable Document Format (PDF), can create a PDF file of a Quark XPress 4.0 page or entire document by exporting it using Adobe Acrobat Distiller. The XTension also can be used to import a page or pages from a PDF file into an XPress page; a thumbnail view of the PDF pages is included.

    The second product in beta, the HTML Text Export XTension, will enable users to export text from an XPress file into standard HTML 3.2 format without having to add codes or tags.


  • SCITEX LTD. CORP.
    Scitex, an imaging systems supplier based in Herzlia, Israel, has announced it is now testing Vio, an international network to support the graphic arts industry with production services.

    Scitex is working with London-based British Telecom in a pilot program -- 20 sites in Europe and 30 in the United States -- to work the bugs out of what is essentially a private global secure intranet.
