  • ACCUWEATHER INC.
    AccuWeather, an independent weather service based in State College, Pa., has announced an agreement with MSNBC to become the new provider of weather information to the news site on the World-Wide Web, at http://www.msnbc.com/.

    AccuWeather, which replaces Intellicast in the role of weather data provider for MSNBC, will provide four-day weather forecasts, Doppler radar images, weather maps and other content. A hot link to the AccuWeather site, http://www.accuweather.com/, has been added to the MSNBC site, affording users a quick way to sign up for AccuWeather's personal weather service.


  • ADOBE SYSTEMS INC.
    Adobe, the leading supplier of desktop publishing software, has declined an offer from Quark Inc. to be acquired by the Denver-based maker of XPress.

    In a series of letters released late yesterday, Quark, a privately held firm, disclosed that it had offered to acquire all or "a significant interest in Adobe at a premium to today's market price for Adobe common stock."

    Quark proposed that if it were to acquire Adobe, it would divest itself of PageMaker, the venerable page layout application, as well as K2, the code name for Adobe's new, next-generation page layout product which is due to be released sometime in the first quarter of 1999.

    Quark also released San Jose-based Adobe's response: "We are not interested in pursuing discussions as we continue to focus on the exciting opportunities available to our company, stockholders, employees, and customers." The letter was signed by Adobe co-chairmen John Warnock and Charles Geschke.

  • AUTOLOGIC INFORMATION INTERNATIONAL
    AII, an imaging systems supplier based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has announced 10 recent sales of its APS 3850 imagers, RIPs and/or APSCOM document distribution product.

    U.S. newspapers among the 10 customers include the CHICAGO TRIBUNE (656k, morning), which ordered one APSCOM Send Server, five APSCOM Receive Servers and three APS 3850 SST color imagers, and the SEATTLE TIMES (232k, evening), which bought an APSCOM Receive Server. In Canada, the HAMILTON (Ontario) SPECTATOR (104k, morning) bought one APS 3850 SST color imager and on APS Media Transporter.

  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    Baseview, a publishing systems supplier based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has announced the recent installation of its AdManagerPro advertising solution at THE SOWETAN (200k, morning) of Johannesburg, South Africa.

    The 30-seat system runs on Apple Macintosh 3G clients and a Windows NT file server. The system, which was installed by First Graphics, Baseview's partner in South Africa, handles production of all display advertising and classifieds at THE SOWETAN.

  • CCI EUROPE
    CCI, a Danish publishing systems supplier with U.S. offices in Kennesaw, Ga., has announced that the DALLAS MORNING NEWS (481k, morning) has bought a CCI NewsDesk Editorial System. More than 600 workstations will be installed to produce three daily editions, channel content to the paper's web site and put out the ARLINGTON MORNING NEWS (27k, morning), the MORNING NEWS' paper serving Arlington, Texas, between Dallas and Fort Worth.

    The CCI system will replace a pagination system from Digital Technology International of Orem, Utah, and an editorial front-end from System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento, Calif. CCI will use an Oracle SQL database at its core, with Mac and Windows NT workstations.

    EMC, a data storage solutions provider based in Hopkinton, Mass., has announced that the CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR of Boston has turned to EMC's web site management services to manage the international daily newspaper's site, e-Monitor, at http://www.csmonitor.com/.

    Data are stored on EMC's Symmetrix storage system and accessed through redundant T3 high-speed communications lines. One consequence of the change from internal to external operation has been a marked increase in response time for users.

    Monotype, an imaging systems supplier based in Rolling Meadows, Ill., has announced two dozen recent sales of its NewsExpress roll-fed capstan recorder to newspapers in Australia, Europe and the United States.

    Among the U.S. customers are the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES (494k, morning) THE POST-TRIBUNE (64k, morning) of Gary, Ind., and the COLUMBUS (Ohio) DISPATCH (250k, morning). Overseas customers include the DAILY ADVERTISER (14k, morning) of Wagga Wagga, Australia, and FRANCE-SOIR (192k, morning) of Paris.

    Scitex, an imaging systems supplier based in Herzlia, Israel, has announced the release of Darwin Desktop 2.0, a Mac-based application for printing personalized documents on demand.

    Darwin features an interface to Quark XPress 4.0, a built-in database containing the variable elements for personalized documents and channeling of jobs to any PostScript output device. Variable elements can include text or images.

    WillowSix, a supplier of image processing software based in San Clemente, Calif., has introduced Flexihood, a monitor hood designed to shield a monitor's screen against ambient light to ensure that screens on calibrated color production systems yield the same display regardless of location.

    Flexihood will fit workstation monitors with screen sizes of 15 to 21 inches and laptop screens as well. One hood costs $17; four or more are $14 apiece.
