  • AMERICAN COMPUTER INNOVATORS
    ACI, a publishing solutions supplier based in Amherst, Mass., has announced that its OpenPages Content Management product will be installed at THE HERALD-SUN (51k, morning) in Durham, N.C. The 67-seat system will include editorial, pagination, wire service collection and archiving modules on a network with access to the World-Wide Web.

  • AMERICAN COPY EDITORS SOCIETY
    The second national conference of the professional copy editors association, which was formed in 1997 and now has more than 800 members, will be Sept. 10-12 at the Portland Marriott in Portland, Ore.

    ACES plans several workshops, addressing science issues, headline writing, editing techniques, on-line concerns, features, sports and business. Panel discussions will focus on the shortage of copy editors, newsroom communications and diversity.

  • DIALOG CORP.
    Dialog, an on-line information provider based in Mountain View, Calif., has introduced GlobalNews Plus, a database of articles from more than 1250 business magazines, newspapers and news wires. Files are indexed in Dialog's World Reporter solution, using InfoSort, Dialog's proprietary data categorization system.

    GlobalNews Plus users will be able to search for content across multiple databases, drawing information from such sources as THE ECONOMIST and Dow Jones Online News. The service carries a flat fee.

  • FARALLON
    Farallon, a supplier of connectivity products for the Macintosh based in Alameda, Calif., has announced it has acquired new financial resources from Gores Technology Group, enabling it to expand its marketing efforts in the education, creative professional and small business realms.

    Farallon has been spun off from Netopia Inc. (which was formerly called Farallon) and will concentrate only on Macintosh connectivity products. It has recently introduced the Fast EtherTX-10/100 CardBus card for the Powerbook G3, the EtherMac iPrint adapter for the iMac and the Fast Starlet dual speed networking hub.

  • ISOQUEST INC.
    IsoQuest, a supplier of web site software based in Fairfax, Va., has announced that Knight Ridder New Media of San Jose, Calif., has adopted IsoQuest's NetOwl ad parsing engine for the new Real Classifieds areas on Knight Ridder's Real Cities web sites.

    NetOwl is used to convert text from legacy newspaper classified systems into searchable, fielded content in an on-line database. NetOwl interprets employment, real estate and auto ads, including display and dealer ads.

    Knight Ridder New Media will use NetOwl initially on three web sites run by Knight Ridder papers in California -- http://www.mercurycenter.com/, http://www.hotcoco.com/ and http://www.sanluisobispo.com/.

  • MACROMEDIA
    San Francisco-based Macromedia, a supplier of graphics production software, has announced that Miami-based Knight Ridder/Tribune Information Services has selected Macromedia FreeHand as the news service's standard for creating and distributing graphics and illustrations for publication in print and on-line.

    KRT, which serves more than 400 newspapers worldwide, will switch to FreeHand on Dec. 20, 1998. Macromedia is on the Web at http://www.macromedia.com/.


  • PUBLISHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS INC.
    PBS, a supplier of newspaper-specific business systems based in Des Plaines, Ill., has announced seven recent contracts for its MediaPlus products, which include MediaPlus Circulation Management, Advertising Management, Financial Management and Postalsoft modules.

    Among the recent customers are Boone Newspapers Inc. of Tuscaloosa, Ala., which will install PBS products at six regional centers serving all of Boone's daily and nondaily papers, and Morris Newspaper Corp. of Augusta, Ga., which will use PBS MediaPlus Circulation and Postalsoft at its 15 newspapers.

  • REAL MEDIA
    New York-based Real Media, a supplier of tools for publishing on the Web, has announced that its Open AdStream product is in use at New York Today, the comprehensive city guide operated by the New York Times Electronic Media Co. at http://www.nytoday.com/. The site uses Real Media's ad management software to serve targeted banner ads bought by 300 charter advertisers.

    Open AdStream is also used by the NEW YORK TIMES site, http://www.nytimes.com/. Real Media is on the Web at http://www.realmedia.com/.


  • TRENDWATCH
    TrendWatch, the Harrisville, R.I.-based monitor of trends in the graphic arts industry, has found that stock photo provider PhotoDisc Inc. has been ranked as the first choice of creative professionals seeking stock images for use in advertising, graphic design and publishing.

    The TrendWatch report also found that creative staff will increase their use of stock photos on a per-project basis, rising from 28 percent of respondents last year to 41 percent this year.
