Cole reaches in discussing a study of classified revenues in the Aug. 3 issue of NEWSINC. The problem: of 80 newspapers contacted, none could provide reliable data for classified revenue for the last five years. Writer J.T. "Tom" Johnson explores the classified realm in a report on an American Press Institute seminar held in July. Johnson's story examines the future of classifieds, both in print and on-line, pointing out that some disturbing trends are beginning to emerge. Also in the Aug. 3, Senior Editor Pete Wetmore rounds up more second-quarter financial results and talks with three industry observers about what the reports show. (In a NEWSINC. EXTRA, Wetmore also reviews the six-month earnings picture and completes coverage of second-quarter results.) And Wetmore goes north of the border to cover the pending sale of the FINANCIAL POST to Southam Inc. and how the business daily will fit into Southam's plans for a new national daily newspaper.
