  • AGFA DIVISION, BAYER CORP.
    New York-based Agfa has announced it has acquired Monotype Typography Inc. of Chicago, bringing under the Agfa umbrella an extensive library of typefaces as well as expertise in non-Latin and extended-Latin languages. Monotype customers will gain access to Agfa's technologies for font management, rasterizing and compression.

    Agfa said Monotype's key executive staff, including President Ira Mirochnick, would continue with the company, which has offices in Palo Alto, Calif.; Redmond, Wash.; Hong Kong and London. The two companies had begun joint marketing of their font libraries in 1997 as the Creative Alliance 8.0 PostScript collection.

  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    Baseview, a subsidiary of Harris Publishing Systems Corp. based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has notched a record 12-month period between July 1997 and June 1998, working with an average of 43 sites each month, raising its payroll to 125 employees and building an addition to its Michigan headquarters.

  • BITSTREAM INC.
    Boston-based Bitstream, a supplier of a variety of publishing systems -- including digital asset management tools -- has announced that the web interface of its MediaBank software will be compatible with the Live Picture Image Server from Live Picture Inc. of Campbell, Calif.

    The compatibility means that users of Live Picture's Flashpix image-access software will be able to zoom in on images regardless of their file size or stored resolution, manipulating the presentation size of one image file into many sizes without loss of image quality.

  • EMC CORP.
    EMC, a producer of digital storage systems based in Hopkinton, Mass., has announced that one of its clients, Dayton, Ohio-based LEXIS-NEXIS, is using EMC's Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems to handle a record 600,000 interactive on-line searches a day.

    LEXIS-NEXIS provides on-line access to legal documents and news archives. The installation includes eight terabytes of storage on the EMC system, as well as EMC's TimeFinder software, which LEXIS-NEXIS is using to test its operation for Year 2000 readiness.

  • GRIFFIN TECHNOLOGY
    Griffin, a computer peripherals supplier based in Nashville, Tenn., has introduced the iMate, a USB-to-ADB adapter that will provide connectivity between Apple's new G3-based iMac computer and devices such as keyboards, mice, trackballs and joysticks. The iMac has a mouse and keyboard unique to the machine.

    The $29 iMate will enable users to mix-and-match USB and ADB devices, and daisy-chain ADB devices attached to an iMac. It will be released in mid-August, when Apple will begin deliveries of the iMac.

  • SHIVASOFT INC.
    ShivaSoft, a supplier of scheduling software based in Edmonton, Canada, has announced that it has licensed its planning product called SHIVA to the WASHINGTON POST in its first sale to a publishing company. More than 50 major corporations in industries such as truck assembly and glass products use SHIVA to manage their manufacturing operations.

  • SOFTWARE CONSULTING SERVICES
    SCS, a publishing solutions supplier based in Nazareth, Pa., has announced recent sales of its advertising, management and editorial products.

    The HIGH POINT (N.C.) ENTERPRISE (30k, morning) will be installing both advertising and editorial solutions from SCS. The advertising purchase includes SCS/ClassPag, AdMAX/Retail, AdMAX/Classified, SCS/Track and an upgrade of its Layout-8000 ad-stacking program. The paper also will be installing a GoodNews editorial system, whose configuration was not detailed.

    Also buying SCS/ClassPag, AdMAX/Retail, AdMAX/Classified and Layout-8000 is INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY (248k, morning) of Los Angeles, while the DAILY TIMES-CALL (21k, evening) of Longmont, Colo., will be installing AdMAX/Classified and SCS/ClassPag.

    Four Michigan papers contracted to buy SCS/NPI, a newsprint inventory system, and 10 papers bought Layout-8000 or an upgrade to the product.

  • TRENDWATCH
    TrendWatch, a monitor of activity in the graphics arts industry based in Harrisville, R.I., has released its semi-annual survey of trends in the industry. The survey, based on responses from ad agencies, graphic design businesses, corporate design offices, publishers and commercial photographers, finds that 52 percent of respondents plan to buy Macintosh workstations in the next 12 months.

    Next on the purchase list are storage devices, at 51 percent; stock photo images, at 48 percent, and desktop color printers at 47 percent. Acquisition of digital cameras was planned by 23 percent of respondents.

    The survey also found optimism about current business conditions, with 56 percent of book and magazine publishers, and 46 percent of ad agencies rating current conditions as both excellent and better than six months ago.

  • UNISYS CORP.
    Unisys, a global technology company with U.S. offices in Blue Bell, Pa., has announced the recent sale of its Unisys Publishing Solutions to Editora O Dia S.A. of Rio de Janeiro, publishers of O DIA (350k, morning) and A NOTICIA (21k, daily).

    The two papers will have a 222-seat Hermes editorial and pagination system, with WireCenter routing software for incoming news feeds and DocCenter for archiving text and images. The system will run on dual Sun E5500 high-availability servers.
