  • COMPUTING INFORMATION SERVICES
    Phoenix-based CIS has announced the recent sale of its CIS.PUB Open to Perseus Group, a publishing house that focuses on historical and political texts. The Windows NT-based system, which has predecessors dating to 1977, will be used as a digital back office to maintain business records.

  • CYBERGRAPHIC INC.
    Cybergraphic, an Australian publishing systems supplier with U.S. offices in Chelmsford, Mass., has announced the sale of the MATRIX circulation and distribution system to Rural Press Ltd. for use at the company's agricultural and regional divisions in Australia. MATRIX is distributed by Cybergraphic in the Pacific region.

    The 30-seat system will include MATRIX Direct, a module for monitoring subscriber payments; MATRIX Newstrade, a distribution management suite, and MATRIX Marketing, tools for maintaining the customer base.

  • EDGIL ASSOCIATES INC.
    Edgil, a publishing business software supplier based in Chelmsford, Mass., has announced that Lee Enterprises Inc. has licensed Edgil's WebCentral on-line classifieds publishing solution for posting ads on the media company's web sites. WebCentral takes in classifieds from front-end systems, parses them and prepares them for retrieval on-line.

    Lee, which publishes daily newspapers and operates television stations in the Midwest and Northwest, also has licensed Edgil's Recruitment Center help-wanted software for posting resumes on-line and bringing employers and job-seekers together; Edgil's Revenue Application Package, which provides users with automated query agents and advertiser profiles, and Edgil's Marketing Statistics module, which examines WebCentral's audit file for data which it makes available to other software for generation of statistical reports.

  • EXTENSIS CORP.
    Extensis, a Quark XPress XTensions developer based in Portland, Ore., has released QX-Tools 4.0, an upgrade of its package of XPress tools that now provides for opening and editing in XPress any file that can be printed from a Windows PC or Macintosh computer.

    Other new features include tools for resizing and scaling groups of elements; comprehensive management of layers within an XPress document; more search and replace options, and object-based style sheets. In addition, QX-FindChange enables users to search for object attributes, such as trapping specs, color or frame thickness, and replace them with new attributes as in the text-editing search and replace function.

    QX-Tools 4.0 is designed to work with the latest release of XPress, Quark XPress 4.0. Extensis is on the Web at http://www.extensis.com/.


  • ISOQUEST INC.
    IsoQuest, a supplier of on-line publishing software based in Fairfax, Va., has announced that the SEATTLE TIMES has adopted IsoQuest's NetOwl for Classifieds parser engine to post liners on the paper's web site, http://www.seattletimes.com/.

    NetOwl for Classifieds uses pattern-matching technology to interpret the contents of employment, real estate and automotive classifieds, then stores the interpreted information in a database for retrieval with an Internet browser.

    The market strength of 'Net stocks is puzzling and troubling, writes NEWSINC. Editor and Publisher David M. Cole in the July 20 issue. His concern: Companies such as Yahoo are raking in major Wall Street support, yet they are dwarfed by the size, resources and reach of American media companies.

  • REAL MEDIA INC.
    New York-based Real Media has announced a syndication agreement with Business Week Online to distribute to newspaper web sites the service's guide to personal computers.

    Called Maven, the guide at http://www.businessweek.com/ conducts independent tests of hardware such as laptops and modems, then posts reviews on the site.

    Newspapers may elect to co-brand Maven's content under an agreement with Real Media by which they receive the content free as well as half the advertising inventory to be sold locally. The other half of the ad space will be sold on behalf of BUSINESS WEEK by Real Media's sales force.

  • SWITCHBOARD INC.
    Switchboard, a provider of directory software for the World-Wide Web based in Westboro, Mass., has announced formation of a partnership with Community Newspaper Co. of Needham, Mass., to provide Switchboard's Yellow Pages product to Community's web sites.

    Community's sales force will be selling advertising space in the Yellow Pages to local merchants in eastern Massachusetts.

    The co-branded directory services will be integrated into Community's Town Online web site at http://www.townonline.com/, including the shopping site, http://www.shop.townonline.com/. Switchboard is on the Web at http://www.switchboard.com/.
