    AdOut, an advertising outsourcing company based in Van Nuys, Calif., has announced it has signed a contract to handle all ad production for the DAILY BREEZE (88k, morning) of Torrance, Calif. The work had been done by the paper's composing room.

  • BITSTREAM INC.
    Bitstream, a publishing solutions supplier based in Cambridge, Mass., has announced a strategic partnership with Katz Digital Technologies Inc., a New York-based digital printing services company. Under the agreement, Katz's CompendiumConnection, an Internet digital asset management system, will incorporate a customized version of Bitstream's MediaBank asset management package.

    Bitstream will promote and co-sell CompendiumConnection, which will run on an Oracle database. MediaBank stores and retrieves all elements associated with a document, such as text, images and multimedia files.

  • CCI EUROPE INC.
    CCI, a Danish publishing systems supplier with U.S. offices in Kennesaw, Ga., has announced the sale of its CCI NewsDesk editorial system to the German newspaper KIELER NACHRICHTEN (127k, morning) in Kiel. The 110-user system, which will run on an Oracle database and IBM RS/6000 servers to Windows NT clients, will be used to produce editions in three other cities. KIELER NACHRICHTEN installed CCI's AdDesk advertising production system in 1997.

    The web site of the purveyors of this very newswire has been redesigned to provide users with easier access to the large compendium of newspaper and publishing technology information The Cole Group makes available on-line.

    The new design -- available at http://colegroup.com -- incorporates a new navigational interface as well as reorganized sections.

    The complete back issues of THE COLE PAPERS and NEWSINC. -- the Cole Group's two print newsletters -- as well as all the back issues of this electronic newsletter are now available on-line (access to the print newsletters is restricted to their subscribers).

    In addition, the opening page of the site now contains a newspaper industry stock market graphic, provided by Media General Financial Services of Richmond, Va. The graphic shows a composite index of newspaper stocks versus the Dow Jones Industrial Average, as well as the industry's price/earnings ratio and a comparison with the overall stock market's price/earnings ratio.

    Colordigital.com is the name of a new company started by graphic arts consultant Joseph Webb of Harrisville, R.I. Webb plans to create on-line and print directories for graphics creators who need help and service with digital color printing techniques.

    Both the web site and directories will feature how-to articles and case studies. The directories will be distributed, free, to 75,000 print buyers, printing firms and creative designers, listing digital printing service bureaus and other providers.

    Color Partnership, a developer of cross-platform color management tools based in Vista, Calif., has introduced OptiCal 2.5, an Apple ColorSync-compliant monitor calibration package.

    OptiCal assists users in calibrated monitors to specified industry or custom standards, automatically or manually, ensuring accurate remote softproofing. The application runs on Mac, Silicon Graphics and selected Windows workstations. With an OptiMate calibration measurement device, OptiCal for Mac or Windows is priced at $695. The software alone costs $249.

    The Silicon Graphics version is $995 for hardware and software, and $445 for software alone.

  • ELECTRONIC CLASSIFIEDS INC.
    ECI, an on-line classifieds software supplier based in San Francisco, has introduced ICE -- Internet Classifieds Engine. ICE, which will be shown at NEXPO Õ98 June 20-23 in Orlando, features on-the-fly modification of classified categories, including the addition or deletion of categories; customized user interfaces, developed from templates or standard HTML authoring tools, and expansion options. ICE is designed for privately-branded web sites.

    -- In Canada, PCI is installing a Quark Publishing System solution at LE JOURNAL DE MONTREAL (259k, morning) in Montreal, Quebec. PCI did not release details about the system's configuration.

    -- The WASHINGTON POST (809k, morning) has retained PCI to implement an ad-tracking solution that will track all ad components, manage preprint schedules and compile ad production statistics.
