Adobe, a desktop publishing software supplier based in San Jose, Calif., has announced it has begun shipping Photoshop 5.0, which features multiple undo, editable text and enhanced color management controls. The English-language version, for both Windows and Macintosh, is available now. Also due out shortly are versions in French, German and Japanese. Blue Sky, a Quark XPress XTensions developer based in Portland, Ore., has introduced MathSet 1.0, an XTension that will typeset complex mathematical computations within a Quark document. A click of the mouse and copy entered in normal text mode is automatically formatted as a mathematical equation. The product has two components, MathSet, the user interface into XPress, and MathSetter, a software engine that typesets the computation using instructions delivered via AppleScript macros. The Mac-based products cost $495 for MathSetter and $295 for MathSet. Blue Sky is on the Web at http://www.bluesky.com/. Extensis, a supplier of photo-manipulation software based in Portland, Ore., has introduced PhotoFrame 1.0, a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop that enables a user to attach a border to any image in Photoshop. The NAA, a professional society based in Vienna, Va., has opened a site on the World-Wide Web devoted to NEXPO '98, the NAA's annual technical conference and trade show which will be June 20-23 in the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. The site, http://www.nexpo.com/, provides information about the conference program, suppliers who plan to exhibit at the show, accommodations and special events tied to NEXPO '98. The site also provides on-line registration, and in early June will have a full list of exhibitors. The NAA is on the Web at http://www.naa.org/. Skipping good industry news, the focus is on the pending move of Knight Ridder from Miami to Silicon Valley. In his cover essay on the May 11 issue, NEWSINC. Editor and Publisher David M. Cole finds the Knight Ridder plan signals a significant change, one that portends that web sites, not web presses, hold the key to the newspaper industry's future. Also in the May 11 issue, Correspondent L. Carol Christopher explains the process followed in setting industry standards (it's not a pretty picture). Senior Editor Pete Wetmore sums up earnings reports and gets a roundup of opinion -- virtually all of it positive -- from analysts and newspaper executives. Wetmore also takes the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations' FAS-FAX numbers for a coast-to-coast tour of notable increases and declines in circulation, with attention paid to numerous Sunday slides. AutoTools can be used to create PostScript files from XPress files, perform pre-flight checking on files (especially for problems with spot colors) and correct errors, and set up hot folders that will be monitored for new jobs to be processed. AutoTools also may be used with AppleScript to automate tasks. AutoTools is compatible with XPress 4.0. Macrobyte is on the Web at http://www.macrobyteresources.com/.
