  • ADOBE SYSTEMS INC.
    Adobe, a supplier of desktop publishing software based in San Jose, Calif., has announced that it will release Photoshop 5.0 next month. New features in the image-handling application include editable text layers, color management support and single-click undoing of multiple steps through the History Palette.

    Photoshop 5.0 also includes the History Brush, which permits a user to combine different iterations of an image. The application will cost $995; an upgrade will be $199.

    Bitstream, a supplier of graphics communications software based in Cambridge, Mass., has announced a 12-city series of half-day seminars called, "Impact of Media Asset Management on Corporate Brands." Heading the seminars will be Michael Moon, president of GISTICS Inc. Attendees will receive a 40-page report detailing why and how companies deploy asset management solutions.

    The seminar dates and cities are: May 12, Chicago; May 14, Toronto; May 18, Seattle; May 19, San Francisco; May 20, Los Angeles; May 21, Dallas; May 28, Atlanta; May 29, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; June 1, Washington, D.C.; June 2, Philadelphia; June 3, New York, and June 4, Boston.

  • CCI EUROPE
    CCI, a Danish publishing systems supplier with U.S. offices in Kennesaw, Ga., has announced that THE ECONOMIST (654k, weekly) of London has purchased a CCI NewsDesk editorial system, replacing a legacy Atex system.

    The 120-seat system will include Windows NT and Macintosh clients, with access to the World-Wide Web. Underlying the CCI NewsDesk Editorial Database will be an Oracle database. THE ECONOMIST publishes multiple zoned editions at six printing sites.

  • GEAC PUBLISHING SYSTEMS
    GEAC, a supplier of advertising solutions based in Tampa, Fla., formerly known as Collier-Jackson, has announced four recent sales of its VisionShift Advertising product.

    The customers were Creative Loafing, a group of eight weeklies in Atlanta; the CHARLESTON (S.C.) POST & COURIER (109k, morning); GALVESTON (Texas) COUNTY DAILY NEWS (27k, morning), which also bought VisionShift Classified, and DAILY NATION (44k, morning) of Barbados.

  • MEDIA DESIGN IN*PROGRESS
    Media Design, a supplier of software for the World-Wide Web based in San Diego, has released version 2.0 of Interaction, Mac OS server software for social web sites that includes the Extensible Markup Language (XML).

    With Interaction, web sites "adapt" to each visitor, serving HTML pages from XML documents based on style sheets and the specifics of a visitor's request. Interaction lists for $795; a personal license costs $245. An evaluation copy is available at http://interaction.in-progress.com/.

    The Newspaper Association of America's annual confab has a surprise: Texas-size interest. NEWSINC. Editor and Publisher David M. Cole reports on the yearly gathering of newspaper publishers and other executives, this time in Dallas. Cole also covers the annual meeting of the Associated Press.

    Senior Editor Pete Wetmore takes a long look at the newspaper labor market in Ohio, where copy editors, graphic artists and computer whizzes are in earnest supply. Wetmore also provides many media companies' first-quarter earnings results, which continued the long line of positive reports.

    SII, a publishing systems supplier based in Sacramento, Calif., has announced three recent sales of its System/77 production solution, bringing the total number sold to six. Systems were purchased by:

    -- CHARLOTTE (N.C.) OBSERVER (239k, morning): 70-seat four-processor Tandem ServerNet System/77 advertising solution running Coyote XA advertising clients.

    -- MORNING CALL (129, morning), Allentown, Pa.: 70-seat two-processor Tandem ServerNet system running Coyote XA advertising clients. The installation will include FaxAction, an application that will process incoming files, whether they be fax, e-mail or over the Internet.

    -- BUSINESS TIMES (60k, morning), Singapore: The first Singapore Press Holdings to go on System/77, the BUSINESS TIMES will have a four-processor system. The company's other publications, including the STRAITS TIMES, will eventually be migrated to System/77.
