    AII, an imaging device and pre-press systems supplier based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has announced it has signed a multi-year contract extension with Harlequin Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., to continue to use Harlequin PostScript software RIPs in AII products, and to continue a development alliance between Harlequin and AII subsidiary Xitron Inc. of Ann Arbor, Mich.

  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    Baseview, a publishing solutions division of the Harris Publishing Systems Corp. based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has announced it worked with 41 sites in January to upgrade or install its products, or to train customers in their use.

    One installation was in Jefferson City, Mo., at the DAILY CAPITAL NEWS (3k, morning) and JEFFERSON CITY POST-TRIBUNE (18k, evening). The system includes eight NewsEditPro IQue workstations, seven DragX pagination workstations and one IQue server.

    In Texas, the GALVESTON COUNTY DAILY NEWS (24k, morning) is using AdManagerPro on 10 workstations and Baseview's ClassFlow classified pagination product.

  • CE ENGINEERING PUBLISHING SYSTEMS INC.
    CE, a publishing solutions supplier based in Loomis, Calif., has announced a plan to expand its service center and extend its customer base beyond newspapers. With newly formed relationships with Tandem Computers, Compaq and Microsoft, CE plans to support sales, service and repair of desktop computers, mainframes and networking technology.

    DT, a publishing systems supplier based in Orem, Utah, has announced that it has been awarded ISO-9001 certification for its publishing software and delivery process. Quality Assurance Services Inc. audited DT against international standards, DT said.

  • FUTURETENSE INC.
    FutureTense, a publishing software supplier based in Acton, Mass., has announced the sale or expansion of its Mission Critical AdFAX remote ad management systems to three newspapers.

    Buying the software to capture faxed-in classified ads are the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE (350k, morning), ASBURY PARK PRESS (157k, morning) of Neptune, N.J., and AUSTIN (Texas) AMERICAN-STATESMAN (179k, morning).

    The ASBURY PARK PRESS will install two servers and eight workstations, feeding text into an advertising system made by System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento. The STAR TRIBUNE is adding an AdFAX server and 10 AdCheck workstations to its AdFAST and AdFAST Exchange systems, while the Austin paper is adding one server and three AdCheck workstations to its AdFAX system.

  • HARLEQUIN INC.
    Harlequin, a pre-press systems software supplier based in Cambridge, Mass., has introduced ScriptWorks 5.0, a software RIP management system that uses PostScript Level 3. Version 5.0 supports direct processing of Portable Document Format (PDF) files, support for Adobe Job Ticket file identification and embedded ICC profiles.

    ScriptWorks 5.0 will be shipped to OEM partners this summer, who will be able to run it on Power Macintosh, Intel-based Pentium PCs (running Windows 95 and Windows NT), DEC Alpha and UNIX platforms.

  • MEDIA GENERAL FINANCIAL SERVICES INC.
    Richmond, Va.-based Media General Financial Services has introduced Financial Sidebar, a web-based graphics service supplying business-oriented graphics to newspapers. Data presented in a visual form are drawn from Media General's database of 9000 public companies in 215 industries, illustrating general company information and specific financial data, such as earnings per share.

    The service is part of BizPage Interactive, a unit of Media General Financial Services, which is a subsidiary of newspaper publisher Media General. Financial Sidebar charges are based on a client newspaper's circulation; a flat monthly fee provides access to six graphics a day.

  • NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
    Times Mirror Chairman Mark Willes will talk about changes he's made as publisher of the LOS ANGELES TIMES at the annual convention of the NAA, April 19-22 in Dallas. Willes will address the professional association, based in Vienna, Va., on April 20.

    Sessions following his talk will examine the Bionic Newspaper -- how new media and old print can interact to add value.

  • PUBLISHING PARTNERS INTERNATIONAL
    PPI, a publishing systems supplier based in Bedford, N.H., has announced the recent sale of its AD2000 advertising system to the KNOXVILLE (Tenn.) NEWS-SENTINEL. The paper will use the system for classified and display ad order entry, billing and receivables.

    Supporting more than 125 users, the Tennessee paper will replace its legacy Atex system with 80 advertising workstations and 25 laptops for the mobile sales force.


  • QUARK INC.
    Denver-based Quark has announced development of Quark Digital Media System, software for managing workflow in a multimedia environment. QuarkDMS will be integrated with other Quark products and third-party applications as well.

    DMS will run on Windows NT and Sun UNIX servers, and Windows and Macintosh clients. Development plans include making DMS compatible with Microsoft SQL and Digital AlphaServer platforms.

    Pricing for the new product, now in beta testing with Independent Newspapers of South Africa and other sites, has not been set.

    Quark also announced the release of version 2.0 of its Quark Publishing System. The upgrade can run on Windows, features server-level logon to multiple publications, improved query results and single-assignment of multiple components of a story package. Upgrades can be delivered via Internet.

  • SOFTWARE CONSTRUCTION CO.
    SCC, a publishing solutions supplier based in Atlanta, has released MediaFactory 2.0, a batch-processing application for Windows NT and Windows 95. Using MediaFactory, users may configure multiple channels for processing images. Other features include file conversion from industry standards to Adobe Photoshop, automatic file routing and photo rotation.

    SCC also announced installation of its MediaServer archive and workflow system at the BAKERSFIELD (Calif.) CALIFORNIAN (72k, morning) and THE HERALD-SUN (50k, morning) in Durham, N.C.
