  • ATEX MEDIA SOLUTIONS INC.
    Atex, a publishing systems supplier based in Bedford, Mass., has announced the sale of its Enterprise advertising system and classified pagination software to four newspapers -- the WINSTON-SALEM (N.C.) JOURNAL (90k, morning), RICHMOND (Va.) TIMES-DISPATCH (210k, morning), the 34,000-circulation MORNING NEWS in Erie, Pa., and its sister paper, the ERIE DAILY TIMES (35k, evening).

    The deals, totaling $1.5 million, include installation of Atex Ad order entry, contact manager, ad producer, and logo manager and retriever software; a credit card sales-verification interface, and an interface for passing information to a third-party billing system. The North Carolina and Virginia papers will use RS/6000 servers; the papers in Erie will use Compaq Proliant 6000 hardware.

  • CCI EUROPE
    CCI, a publishing systems supplier based in Aarhus, Denmark, with U.S. offices in Kennesaw, Ga., has announced the sale of its NewsDesk editorial system to the SAN ANTONIO (Texas) EXPRESS-NEWS (216k, morning).

    The 211-user installation, running on Windows NT, will include CCI LayoutChamp page design workstations, CCI Edit/Microsoft Word for reporters, CCI ArticleChamp WYSIWYG copy editing/design workstations and CCI DB Access, which will integrate such applications as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Quark XPress and Macromedia FreeHand for use on Apple PowerMacs.

    The CCI NewsDesk servers will be based on an Oracle relational database running on Sun Ultra SPARC hardware.

    Outside the United States, CCI announced the sale of CCI NewsDesk to RADIO TIMES, a 1.4 million-circulation weekly television listings magazine published in England by BBC Worldwide. CCI, which will replace a system made by System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento, will be integrated into an environment that includes about 500 workstations, including Apple Macintoshes.

  • DATA SCIENCES INC.
    DSI, a circulation software supplier based in Silver Spring, Md., has announced the sale of its DSI/Circulation distribution management product to THE HERALD of Everett, Wash. (55k, morning). The client/server system runs on Windows NT, using an Oracle7 database. It includes Postalsoft address-cleansing and CASS certification software. Installation was to begin this month.

  • QUARK INC.
    Quark, a page-layout software supplier based in Denver, has announced it will acquire Coris Inc., a subsidiary of Chicago-based R.R. Donnelley and Sons. Coris makes Coris Publisher 3.0, a production management tool. The engineers behind Coris Publisher will join Quark, which plans to incorporate Publisher in future content-management products.

  • SCITEX CORP. LTD.
    Scitex, an imaging systems manufacturer based in Herzlia, Israel, with U.S. offices in Bedford, Mass., has announced it has acquired another Israeli company, Idanit Technologies Ltd., maker of wide-format inkjet digital printing systems.

    The $60 million purchase is expected to be completed by the end of March. Idanit, which will operate as an independent business unit under Scitex, had $13 million in sales in 1997, its first year of commercial operation. Customers include service bureaus and silk-screen printers.

  • TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
    Chicago-based TMS, a provider of content for print and on-line distribution, has announced it will sell its TMS Stocks service to New York-based Associated Press. TMS Stocks supplies customized stock market listings and other financial data products to newspapers; its customers will be switched over to AP's Grand Central Stocks.

  • UNISYS CORP.
    Unisys, a publishing systems supplier based in Italy with U.S. offices in Blue Bell, Pa., has announced the sale of its Hermes editorial/pagination product and WireCenter communications management software to two papers published in Barcelona, Spain.

    The 300-seat system, running on three Sun Solaris servers, will serve LA VANGUARDIA (250k, morning) and the sports-oriented EL MUNDO DEPORTIVO (125k, morning) replacing an Atex system. Access to publishing on the World-Wide Web will be provided by the Hermes Web Publisher application.

  • WILLOW BEND COMMUNICATIONS INC.
    Dallas-based Willow Bend has announced the sale of its distribution marketing and presentation system to THE SUN-SENTINEL in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The system's Microsoft SQL Server software will run on an existing DEC Alpha server, providing the paper with a geographic information system that features plotting addresses on digitized street maps for viewing, editing and analyzing.

    The installation will include Route Xpert, a tool for building and managing delivery routes; Presentation Xpert, software for automating insertion orders, and Matching Xpert, a utility for matching addresses on internal and external lists. THE SUN-SENTINEL maintains a list of two million addresses in its South Florida circulation area.
