  • ASSOCIATED PRESS
    New York-based AP has announced it will be a reseller for a new digital camera made by the Eastman Kodak Co. of Rochester, N.Y. The DCS 520 was debugged with help from the AP, and photographers covering Super Bowl XXXII used a preproduction model of the DCS 520.

    Kodak said the new product is its first fully integrated digital single-lens reflex camera specifically designed for photojournalists and commercial photographers. It features variable ISO of 200 to 1600, real time image verification through a histogram displayed on the LCD, and newly developed charge coupled device sensor technology.

    List price for the DCS 520 is $14,995. Kodak dealers will begin stocking it in late March.

  • CE ENGINEERING
    CE, a publishing software supplier based in Loomis, Calif., has announced that the HOUSTON CHRONICLE has bought more copies of CE's Decade 97, Windows-based software that opens the door between a PC and a publishing system made by System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento. CE said the purchase raised the CHRONICLE's stack of Decade 97 copies to 212.

  • CYMBOLIC SCIENCES
    Cymbolic, an imaging device manufacturer based in Blaine, Wash., has announced that Agfa Corp. has signed an OEM agreement under which Agfa will market, sell and support Cymbolic's four-up and eight-up computer-to-plate products world-wide. Cymbolic's NewsJet, which can image a single page at 1000 dpi in 45 seconds, will be renamed and serviced by Agfa.

    Cymbolic also announced it had installed its 100th CTP system, with 10 sales inked in six weeks in December and January. Customer sites were not listed.

  • DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORP.
    DEC's Multimedia Publishing Group, a software and integration provider based in Piscataway, N.J., has announced the sale of a 42-seat CompuClass 5.0 classified system to the BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN (72k, morning).

    The system, made by CompuText Inc. of Houston, will run on DEC AlphaServers using a Microsoft SQL database. Quark XPress using CompuText XTensions will provide classified pagination.

  • FUTURETENSE
    FutureTense, a supplier of software for publishing on the World-Wide Web based in Acton, Mass., has announced the general release of its Internet Publishing System. FutureTense IPS, which separates design and content functions, includes a project management system, developers kit and design tools.

  • MULTI-AD SERVICES INC.
    Multi-Ad, a display ad software supplier based in Peoria, Ill., has announced a partnership with Ad/Out, a Van Nuys, Calif.-based company that designs automotive classified ads. Under the agreement, Ad/Out will design custom automotive ads for Multi-Ad's Selective Classified Advertising for Newspapers (SCAN). Newspapers relying on SCAN include the BOSTON HERALD, DETROIT NEWS and DALLAS MORNING NEWS.

    New York-based Real Media, an on-line advertising solutions supplier and ad-support service provider, has announced creation of a new business unit to sell and support Open AdStream, the ad management software used on Real Media web sites. Previously, Open AdStream was made available to sites that wanted Real Media to represent them to advertisers.

    The stand-alone Open AdStream product features inventory and campaign forecasting, custom reports, ad targeting and guaranteed ad delivery. More than 200 companies world-wide use Open AdStream.


  • SOFTAD INC.
    SoftAd, a sales automation software supplier based in Mill Valley, Calif., has announced that it has begun installing the rates and scheduler modules of its Media SalesExcelerator at the DAILY OKLAHOMAN (204k, morning) in Oklahoma City.

    DAILY OKLAHOMAN display ad staffers already are using eight of SoftAd's 11 SalesExcelerator modules. When this phase of SoftAd's project is complete, sales personnel will have access to customer contract data from the paper's Admarc system, and will be able to schedule ad insertions from their laptops.

  • SYSTEM INTEGRATORS INC.
    Sacramento-based SII announced that the DESERT SUN (43k, morning), a Gannett Co. Inc. paper in Palm Springs, Calif., will be installing a 30-seat CZAR advertising system. The client will be the Windows-based Coyote/3XA; the configuration will include FaxAction, a system for processing inbound faxes made by Associated Information Systems International Inc. of Auburn, Calif.

    SII also announced that VERDENS GANG (370k, morning) of Oslo, Norway, will upgrade its System/55 to System/77, the first paper in Europe to move to SII's ServerNet technology, made by Tandem Computers of Cupertino, Calif.
