  • AMERICA ONLINE INC.
    AOL, the on-line service based in Dulles, Va., has announced it has acquired Personal Library Software of Rockville, Md., a developer of search technologies that created the core technology AOL uses in its search engine. AOL will exchange its common stock for PLS and its software products; PLS will continue to support current customers under AOL's ownership.

  • CCI EUROPE
    CCI, a publishing systems supplier based in Denmark with U.S. offices in Marietta, Ga., has announced the sale of its NewsDesk front-end editorial system to Arvakur h.f. of Iceland, which publishes MORGUNBLADID (60k, morning) in Reykjavik.

    The 116-seat CCI installation will replace a Norsk Data system and be integrated with an existing Atex Enterprise classified system. Windows NT clients will access an Oracle database running on Sun UltraSPARC servers.

  • 4-SIGHT
    4-Sight, a supplier of communications software based in England with U.S. offices in Woburn, Mass., has introduced a leasing plan for its file transfer product, iSDN Manager. A two-year contract, with no up-front costs, is $90 a month. Included are iSDN Manager software, an ISDN card and a network terminator; the connection runs at 128 kilobits per second.

    iSDN Manager, which is available in four languages, is used by the Associated Press as part of its AdSEND digital ad delivery system.

  • FREEDOM SYSTEM INTEGRATORS
    FSI, a publishing systems supplier based in Wichita, Kan., has announced it has developed custom Internet classified advertising interfaces for three clients: Thomson Interactive Media of Stamford, Conn., AdQuest Classifieds of Waupaca, Wis., and Nando.net of Raleigh, N.C. The interfaces access FSI's ADvance Sales system -- which stores ads in both ASCII and HTML versions -- then extract data from the Oracle ad database and publish them on the Web.

  • FUTURETENSE INC.
    FutureTense, a provider of on-line publishing solutions based in Acton, Mass., has announced a licensing agreement with Netscape Communications Corp. of Mountain View, Calif., under which FutureTense will incorporate KIVA server software in its professional web publishing software, the Internet Publishing System (IPS). Netscape acquired KIVA Software in December.

    The addition of KIVA will enable FutureTense customers to more easily scale their systems, from a workgroup to an extended enterprise. IPS is due to ship sometime in the first quarter of 1998.

  • HARRIS PUBLISHING SYSTEMS CORP.
    Harris, a publishing systems supplier based in Melbourne, Fla., has announced three recent orders:

    -- TAMPA (Fla.) TRIBUNE (255k, morning): Harris XP-21 server software, several NewsMaker pagination licenses, IMAGES photo-workstation software, PageTrak production tracking system and XP-Link applications for the Macintosh.

    -- THE UNION-NEWS, Springfield, Mass. (98k, morning): 170-seat NewsMaker editorial system with wire server and fax output software, several pagination licenses and a C-PAG license for classified pagination.

    -- ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH (321k, morning): 185-seat NewsMaker editorial system with pagination software licenses, a 77-seat CASH classified system with pagination license, and WebCASH for publishing classified ads on the Web.

    Nova, a systems integrator based in Auburn, Calif., has announced a marketing agreement with Associated Information Systems International Inc. (AISI) of Auburn to incorporate AISI products in Nova's two publishing solutions, Nova Median and Nova Gold. Under the accord, AISI will make available to Nova its auto inventory database and ad transmission system, AUTObase; its fax OCR system, FaxAction; its World-Wide Web classified ad system, WebPub, and its ad sale automation software, OffSight.

  • SEYBOLD SEMINARS
    Print and Internet publishing tools will be on display March 16-20 at Seybold Seminars New York/Publishing 98. More than 25,000 attendees are expected to flood the Javits Convention Center to see exhibits by more than 300 technology companies.

  • TRENDWATCH
    TrendWatch, a publishing industry consulting firm based in Harrisville, R.I., reports in a recent survey that computer-to-plate technology is gaining favor among printers and color reproduction job shops, although some also saw CTP as a threat to their business.

    CTP was seen as an opportunity by 58 percent of the surveyed printers and 39 percent of separators, but as the top technology concern by 23 percent of respondents.
