Baseview, a subsidiary of Harris Publishing Systems Corp. based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has introduced Web Import, a feature of Baseview's CirculationPro software that can be used to gather subscriber data from a web site and import it into the circulation database. Information entered via the web page is imported into Subscription Handler, one of three modules in CirculationPro, where it can be viewed, edited or discarded, and can be accessed by anyone on the circulation system. The new owner of the VIRGIN ISLANDS DAILY NEWS, Innovative Communication Corp. of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, has retained The Cole Group of Daly City, Calif., to provide interim editorial and business office leadership at the Pulitzer Prize-winning paper. Innovative, which acquired the DAILY NEWS on Dec. 30, will rely on Cole Group Consultant Mike Middlesworth to provide newsroom and business side counsel as acting CEO and executive editor for three to six months. Middlesworth worked for newspapers for 35 years, including 19 at the HONOLULU ADVERTISER, where he was managing editor and business manager. He became a Cole Group consultant in 1993. Middlesworth replaces Ronald Dillman, who retired after 18 years as the paper's chief executive and general manager, and Penny Feuerzeig, the paper's executive editor. Dillman will continue with the DAILY NEWS as a consultant; Feuerzeig has been named the paper's editorial page editor. Digital Ink, the new media subsidiary of the WASHINGTON POST, has announced that Internet surfers now have access to POST stories published since September 1986. Access to the archives at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-adv/archives will be free for an introductory period. The fee schedule is $2.95 per article when downloaded on a weekday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.; outside those hours, the fee will be $1.50 per article. Users will be asked to supply a credit card number during the free-use period, so that charges can easily be applied when fees are charged. Also new at washingtonpost.com is Style Live, an entertainment guide for the nation's capital; Community Resources, a source of information about Washington for residents, and washingtonpost.com Yellow Pages. Harris, a publishing solutions supplier based in Melbourne, Fla., has announced that it will introduce a new product for publishing classified ads on the Web at the Interactive Newspapers '98 conference Feb. 4-7 in Seattle. WebCASH, which was previewed at NEXPO '97 in New Orleans, features a graphical user interface and fuzzy logic for use in searches of classified ad databases on-line. WebCASH can be set up to transfer print classifieds automatically to a web site, applying HTML formats on the way. For six months, WebCASH has been used by Trade-A-Plane, http://www.trade-a-plane.com/, a thrice-monthly general aviation trade magazine that carries about 10,000 classified and display ads in each issue. Harris is on the Web at http://www.harris.com/hpsc/. Managing Editor, a publishing software supplier based in Jenkintown, Pa., has released Version 2.5 of its Page Director Advertising Layout System. ALS 2.5, which is used to dummy ad stacks, was developed in concert with customers. New features include the use of PDF (Portable Document Format) files to enable all users to see any page independently of all other users, an enhanced guaranteed-placement function to meet advertisers' requests for positioning ads, and printable thumbnail previews of pages. Nova, a software support company based in Auburn, Calif., has announced two alliances with companies in Australia and the United States, creating Nova's Median product line which runs on either Windows 95 or Macintosh. Nova now has exclusive U.S. rights to market, install and support the classified publishing system made by Pongrass Australia Pty. Ltd. of Sydney, Australia. The Pongrass product features integrated ROP billing, ad order entry and classified pagination. Nova has signed a reseller agreement with David R. Lightfoot LLC of Annapolis, Md., for the rights to market the Wilkinson SCOOP editorial system with text archive and photo links. SCOOP is made and marketed in Europe. New York-based Real Media, a supplier of on-line classified and display ad management software, has announced that Netscape Communications Corp. of Mountain View, Calif., has chosen Real Media's Open AdStream as the preferred ad management software for Netscape PublishingXpert 2.0. Netscape PublishingXpert is part of Netscape's CommerceXpert product line for conducting commerce on the Internet. Netscape will sell a special version of OAS that integrates AdStream's advertising features with PublishingXpert's content delivery and customization features. PublishingXpert with Open AdStream will be marketed worldwide by Netscape and its distribution partners. Netscape is on the Web at http://home.netscape.com/. StarNine, formerly a subsidiary of Quarterdeck Corp. based in Berkeley, Calif., has announced the sale of StarNine to Platinum Equity Holdings of Los Angeles. The former vice president of sales and marketing, Scott Steward, was named president of the new company, which was named StarNine Inc. Platinum Equity is expected to allow StarNine to operate autonomously. StarNine develops publishes and markets Internet server software, content creation tools, electronic commerce software and e-mail connectivity products, notably the WebSTAR Internet server. StarNine also offers ListSTAR list server software, WebCollage automated content creation software, WebCatalog and WebMerchant commerce tools, Quarterdeck Mail and Mail*Link Internet e-mail gateways. StarNine is on the Web at http://www.starnine.com/; Platinum Equity Holdings is at http://www.peh.com/. SII, a publishing systems supplier based in Sacramento, has announced an agreement with Nova Publishing Systems Inc. of Auburn, Calif., under which Nova will have exclusive rights to distribute and install SII's editorial and advertising software and Coyote/3 Windows-based client software. Nova may sell the new turnkey product, called Nova Gold, only to non-SII sites with circulation below 80,000, and some selected SII customers. In the first quarter of 1998, Novaalso plans to ship enhancements to the Coyote/3 X client, including a Quark extension that allows database publishing using Quark XPress.
