  • AMIABLE TECHNOLOGIES INC.
    Amiable, a connectivity software provider based in Philadelphia, has introduced the Mac/PCI card for PCI-based Macintoshes, allowing print jobs to be sent to a printer's high-speed parallel port at rates as high as 300 kilobits a second. Users can print to a range of industry-standard devices with the Mac/PCI card, which lists for $399.

  • ASSOCIATED INFORMATION SYSTEMS INTERNATIONAL INC.
    AISI, a publishing software provider based in Auburn, Calif., has announced the sale of its AUTObase auto dealer inventory and ad transmission system to the OGDEN (Utah) STANDARD-EXAMINER (63k, evening), which has agreed to be a beta site for AISI, and the RIVERSIDE (Calif.) PRESS-ENTERPRISE (163k, morning).

    AISI said THE GAZETTE (68k, morning) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, had signed a letter of intent to buy AUTObase.

    AISI also announced that the ORLANDO SENTINEL has purchased FaxAction, OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and routing software developed by Competent Consulting of Sacramento. FaxAction is expected to cut inbound-fax processing time at the SENTINEL, which gets 1000 faxes a week, from 278 hours to 87 hours a week.

  • HARRIS PUBLISHING SYSTEMS CORP.
    Harris, a publishing systems supplier based in Melbourne, Fla., is preparing to sponsor the fourth seminar in its series about publishing integration. The two-day, $150 session, called "Publishing Integration: The Advertising Angle," will be Jan. 22-23 in Melbourne.

  • SCITEX CORP.
    Scitex, an imaging device supplier based in Israel with U.S. offices in Bedford, Mass., has introduced a new four-up imagesetter, the Dolev 4press Vx. In combination with a laser that features a 36,000-rpm spinner and options for loading and unloading film, the 4press Vx can output 28 imposed pages an hour, including newspaper doubletrucks.

    The device's highest resolution is 4064 dpi; maximum film width is 29.5 inches. A Scitex Brisque digital front-end drives the 4press, which accepts industry-standard file formats such as PostScript and PDF (Portable Document Format). An internal drum recorder, the new imager offers optional, customizable punches.

    More than 300 technology companies are preparing to display their products at Seybold Seminars New York/Publishing 98, which will be held March 16-20 at the Javits Convention Center. More than 25,000 people are expected to attend.

    SCC, a supplier of media management software based in Atlanta, has announced a marketing agreement with Publishing Connections Inc. under which PCI will distribute SCC's MediaGrid archive workflow tool and MediaFactory multimedia file manager. PCI is an integrator and software distributor based in Bethesda, Md.

  • SYSTEM INTEGRATORS INC.
    SII, a publishing systems supplier based in Sacramento, Calif., has announced the release of SCOOP II, its OPI (Open Pre-press Interface) and routing software. SII offers an option with SCOOP, PagePairer, to impose pages so page pairs can be output, saving time and materials.

    SCOOP II runs on the Sun Solaris 2.5.1. operating system and is compatible with page layout programs such as Quark XPress. The Gazette Co. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is using SCOOP II to produce pages for THE GAZETTE (68k, morning). Beta testing is under way at another U.S. newspaper as well as one in Norway.

  • UNISYS CORP.
    Unisys, a global publishing systems supplier with U.S. offices in Blue Bell, Pa., has announced a multimillion-dollar contract with LA STAMPA (429k, morning) of Turin, Italy. Unisys will install 400 workstations to run the Unisys Publishing Solutions (Hermes for editorial, WireCenter for incoming text and DocCenter for multimedia archiving). Unisys is replacing an Atex system at the 12-edition-a-day daily.

  • USA TODAY INFORMATION NETWORK
    USA TODAY, a national newspaper published by Gannett Co. Inc. from Arlington, Va., has introduced a fee-based electronic archive service through its web site, http://archives.usatoday.com/. The pay-per-view service offers access to USA TODAY articles published as far back as April 1987. Users may download a story for $1.
