  • AUGMENT SYSTEMS INC.
    Augment, which makes high-end servers for large-file transfers and is based in Westford, Mass., has named Prepress Automation Co. Ltd. its first distributor in Canada, as well as its marketing and customer support channel. Prepress Automation will incorporate the Augment AFX 410 file server in its advertising campaign starting in January 1998.

  • AUTOLOGIC INFORMATION INTERNATIONAL INC.
    AII, a publishing solutions supplier based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has reported net income of $1.4 million or 25 cents a share on revenues of $25 million for fiscal 1997, which ended Oct. 31, 1997. In the year's first quarter, AII sold Digiflex, a supplier of ad delivery software. AII, which is on the World-Wide Web at http://www.autoiii.com/, manufactures the popular 3850 imagesetter.


  • BELLATRIX SYSTEMS
    Bellatrix, a supplier of single-copy sales tracking systems based in Bend, Ore., has announced installation of its SINGLE-TRAK data acquisition and management system at the BOSTON GLOBE (477k, morning) and ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH (313k, morning). SINGLE-TRAK helps manage single-copy sales by collecting and analyzing point-of-sale data.

  • CYBERGRAPHIC SYSTEMS INC.
    Cybergraphic, a publishing systems supplier based in Melbourne, Australia, with U.S. offices in Burlington, Mass., has announced that Illawarra Newspapers Holdings Pty. Ltd. of Wollongong, in New South Wales, Australia, has signed a contract for news and advertising systems.

    Illawarra Newspapers publishes the ILLAWARRA MERCURY (35k, morning) and WOLLONGONG ADVERTISER (98k, weekly). The contract includes 45 CyberNews clients for reporters, 15 CyberPage clients for page layout and copy editing, and 30 CyberAd advertising clients.

    The system will run on two clustered 64-bit AlphaServers 1000A, each with a 400 megahertz processor, 256 megabytes of memory and 20 gigabytes of disk space. Current Multi Ad Creator functionality will be integrated into the Cybergraphic AlphaServer and OPIServer environment. Being replaced are systems made by System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento and Atex Media Solutions of Bedford, Mass.

  • LOS ANGELES TIMES
    The web site of the LOS ANGELES TIMES now offers same-day tickets and discount tickets for many Southern California sports and entertainment events. Two ticketing services are at http://www.latimes.com/tix/ -- TicketMart, for discounted tickets, and TIX, for daily events -- under agreements with Ticketmaster, Advantix and ETM Entertainment Network Inc.

    Surfers can search the web site for the day's events as listed by area venues and promoters. Ticketmasters' TicketMart will offer same-day tickets at discounts of up to 50 percent. Through independent secure servers, consumers can use a credit card to purchase tickets.


  • MONOTYPE SYSTEMS INC.
    Monotype, an imaging systems manufacturer based in Rolling Meadows, Ill., has announced that the ALBANY TIMES-UNION (100k, morning) has bought three Monotype Systems NT RipExpress workstations running on 166 megahertz Pentium workstations. It was Monotype's first sale to the TIMES-UNION.

  • NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
    The NAA, a trade association based in Vienna, Va., is preparing its third annual newspaper operations SuperConference Jan. 11-16 at the Fontainebleau Hilton in Miami Beach. The program spans four subjects: Pre-press and Health & Safety (Jan. 11-13), Press & Materials (Jan. 13-14) and Post-press (Jan. 14-16).

    Discussions will include the Year 2000 issue, color quality, pagination, ad processing and management systems, image handling, web classified advertising, OSHA's most frequently encountered safety problems, ergonomics, environmental issues, NAA's Newsprint Waste Management program, microzoning operations, post-press automation and productivity.

    On Jan. 12, David Cox, NAA chairman and CEO of Cowles Media Co., will speak on the challenges the newspaper industry faces in the years ahead; Thomas Landauer, professor of psychology, University of Colorado and author of the recently published book, "The Trouble with Computers", will discuss pre-press issues, and Mayco Villafana, senior vice president, corporate communications, Greater Miami Conventions & Visitor Bureau, will address health and safety matters.

    On Jan. 13, P. Anthony Ridder, chairman and CEO of Miami-based Knight-Ridder Inc., will speak on press and materials topics. The next day, Richard Gottlieb, president and CEO of Lee Enterprises Inc. of Davenport, Iowa, will handle post-press issues.

  • TIME WARNER INC.
    The chairman and CEO of New York-based Time Warner, Gerald Levin, recently urged the private sector to recognize its special responsibility in fighting illiteracy in America. Addressing the Executives' Club of Chicago, Levin said, "I believe very deeply that the social dislocation we now face will only grow more threatening without a broad resolve by the private sector to make illiteracy our problem. ... The new millennium will be shaped by our willingness to treat America's children not as objects of holiday charity, but of everyday justice."

    Levin suggested that one-to-one mentoring programs are one example of what could be undertaken. "Our enduring hope for moral meaning and social progress," he concluded, "for peace on earth and good will to all, rests on our willingness as individuals and as a community, to take responsibility for the world's children. Wherever they may be."

  • WAVESHIFT INC.
    Waveshift, a provider of Internet publishing software based in Cameron Park, Calif., has announced that Nando.net, the new media division of Sacramento-based McClatchy Newspapers Inc., has acquired a 16 percent stake in Waveshift and will host its new YourTown.net service, which automates the process of gathering, organizing and publishing information from hundreds of local organizations on a web site.

    Nando.net will host YourTown.net from its offices in Raleigh, N.C. Initial YourTown.net sites include McClatchy's BEE newspapers in Sacramento, Fresno and Modesto, Calif.

  • ZEBRA PUSHWARE SOLUTIONS
    Zebra, an Internet software supplier based in Jerusalem, has announced that the JERUSALEM POST will use Zebra's infoPager digital transmission product to distribute the Personal Post in January 1998. infoPager enables publishers to create an electronic publication resembling a newspaper that can be viewed or printed off-line. A compressed edition can be downloaded in about five minutes.

    Readers can select content they wish to see, allowing advertisers to target readers. Editions are created with the Windows-based infoPager Management Server in less than an hour; subscribers download with a free copy of infoPager Viewer, which can be obtained from http://www.infopager.com/.
