  • THE COLE GROUP
Tithing isn't just for churches, COLE PAPERS Editor and Publisher David M. Cole contends. There are sound economic reasons for the newspaper industry to adopt a policy of channeling a fixed percentage of revenue into three areas: research and development, training and education. Elaborating on his proposal in the December issue of THE COLE PAPERS, Cole offers economists' arguments for such a plan, and offers examples of industry programs that work.

Also in the December issue, Senior Editor Pete Wetmore provides an update on the newspaper industry's progress in squashing the Year 2000 bug (it's going fairly well), Correspondent Marion J. Love reports from the Founder's Conference at the New Media Center of the American Press Institute (participants included a rock 'n' roll star, folklorist and newspaper types), and Editor Cole explores the values and woes of front-end systems that claim to be either proprietary or off-the-shelf.

NEWSINC. reports that newspapers do not anticipate sharp increases in ad rates, Correspondent Jon Fine writes in the Dec. 8 issue. Coming off an excellent year for retail and classified advertising linage, many papers are going to ask advertisers for increases of three or four percent, Fine reports. Also, Senior Editor Pete Wetmore reports on the return-to-sender status of a proposed new rule from the Audit Bureau of Circulations, how papers in Chicago and San Francisco used interest-based bargaining to reach record contracts, upcoming new products from Dow Jones Markets and another round of newspaper sales.
