  • ARCHETYPE INC.
    Archetype, a division of Bitstream Inc. based in Burlington, Mass., and Eastman Kodak Co. of Rochester, N.Y., have announced that Archetype has licensed Kodak's Color Management System (CMS) for integration into Archetype's InterSep OPI server and MediaBank output manager. Archetype will use some of Kodak's library of ICC profiles for color scanners, printers and CYMK offset printing specifications.

    Kodak CMS will enable users to process any ICC profiles, including Kodak Photo CD, for true color matching across all devices. Kodak CMS packaged with MediaBank will allow generation of color-corrected previews.

  • ATEX MEDIA SOLUTIONS
    Atex, a publishing systems supplier based in Bedford, Mass., has signed several major contracts for its publishing solutions:

    -- The E.W. Scripps Co. of Cincinnati has bought advertising front-end systems for four of its newspapers: The DAILY CAMERA in Boulder, Colo. (35k, morning); ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS in Denver (331k, morning); EVANSVILLE (Ind.) COURIER (62k, morning), and COMMERCIAL APPEAL in Memphis, Tenn. (178k, morning).

    -- Thomson Newspapers of Stamford, Conn., will install Atex's Enterprise advertising system with R5 classified pagination and the DewarView editorial system at several of its weekly and daily newspapers in Wisconsin. The dailies are THE POST-CRESCENT in Appleton (60k, evening), THE REPORTER in Fond du Lac (19k, evening), HERALD TIMES REPORTER in Manitowoc (18k, evening) and SHEBOYGAN PRESS (28k, evening). DewarView and Enterprise are in use at THE POST-CRESCENT; they will replace other systems at the other papers.

  • AUTOLOGIC INFORMATION INTERNATIONAL
    AII, an imaging device manufacturer based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has announced development of its first computer-to-plate recorder, the APS 3850CTP. Based on AII's popular 3850 line of imagesetters, the new device features automated plate handling, with capacity of up to 100 broadsheet plates imaged at 1270 dpi per hour. Red and green laser models are available, with top resolution of 2540 dpi.

  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    Baseview, a subsidiary of Harris Publishing Systems Corp. based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has finished installing an IQue Editorial System at THE HERALD-PALLADIUM (33k, evening) in St. Joseph, Mich. The paper's installation has 32 NewsEditPro IQue workstations running off one IQue server, eight pagination stations and four copies of WireManager IQue. THE HERALD-PALLADIUM is also using the Phrasea archive system for text and images.

    Also in September, ROLLING STONE and US MAGAZINE, both of New York, added to their existing Baseview software.

  • LEXIS-NEXIS
    LEXIS-NEXIS, an on-line archive service based in Dayton, Ohio, has added a group file -- 90DAYS -- to its NEWS Library on the NEXIS service. The new file contains the same sources found in the current news file, CURNWS, but includes only articles from the past 90 days.

  • LINOPRESS PUBLISHING SYSTEMS
    LinoPress, an independent subsidiary of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG of Germany with U.S. offices in Hauppauge, N.Y., has introduced its LinoPress Publishing System for the Windows NT platform. Functionality matches Macintosh modules now in use at more than 230 publications worldwide. The first LinoPress system running Windows NT is at the LUXEMBURGER WORT (90k, morning), Luxembourg's largest daily.

    The mainstream press made much of the new relationship being forged between the business office and newsroom of the LOS ANGELES TIMES.   • SAXOTECH A/S
    SAXoTECH, a publishing systems supplier based in Aalborg, Denmark, has announced two recent sales:

    -- A 70-seat, Mac-based editorial system has been bought by A/S Sjaellandske Dagblade in Denmark. The WAN-based, multi-newsroom system will serve Sjaellandske Dagblade's two dailies -- NAESTVED TIDENDE (34k, evening) and SJAELLANDS TIDENDE (16k, evening) -- and the group's three weeklies. The system includes pagination features and the supplier's new archiving system, the SAXoBRS/Search Archiving System, running on the BRS/SEARCH database.

    -- SAXoTECH and a Norwegian distributor, Luth Grafisk AS, will provide solutions to two Norwegian dailies, HARSTAD TIDENDE (16k, morning) in Harstad and AGDERPOSTEN (26k, morning) in Arendal. The Mac-based installation at Harstad includes 30 editorial workstations running an Oracle database on SunSPARC UNIX servers. The first phase is to be in production before the end of 1997. The installation at AGDERPOSTEN totals 40 editorial workstations running on Compaq ProLiant Windows NT servers, also using the Oracle database.

    SAXoTECH also has announced two marketing alliances -- with GraphicArt of Bern, Switzerland, to sell SAXoTECH products in Switzerland and Lichtenstein, and Wifac b.v. of Bern to sell SAXoTECH solutions in the Benelux countries.

  • T/ONE INC.
    T/ONE, a digital archive system supplier based in Quincy, Mass., has announced two recent sales of its Merlin image and graphics archiving solution:

    -- THE PRESSÐENTERPRISE (170k, morning) in Riverside, Calif., will install in November a Compaq ProLiant dual Pentium Pro 200-megahertz Windows NT Server, a 45-gigabyte RAID (Level 5) array and a site license for 10 clients. Installation is scheduled for November. In 1998, the paper plans to add storage capacity to hold more than 150,000 images.

    -- The HOUSTON CHRONICLE (545k, morning) has purchased T/ONE's Merlin for storage and retrieval of news service and local photos, and TRAX for handling all photo assignment requests, and tracking and captioning of scanned images. Merlin's Webmaster will make images available to anyone with a web browser on the CHRONICLE's intranet. The paper will install a dual Pentium Pro 200-megahertz Windows NT server with backup, a 45-gigabyte RAID (Level 5), 100-CD jukebox and CD authoring station, and a site license for 10 clients.

  • ZIP2 CORP.
    Zip2, a supplier of web-based database solutions based in Mountain View, Calif., has announced contracts with several newspapers and newspaper groups. The NEW YORK TIMES chose Zip2 to develop its new on-line city guide, New York Today. Zip2 has licensed to the TIMES a community publishing module; a business directory with door-to-door directions; a guide to arts, entertainment and dining in New York; a real estate guide, and a new automotive guide featuring e-mail notification when the specified vehicle is found.

    Zip2 has contracts with 133 newspapers, including all those published by Knight-Ridder Inc. of Miami, Morris Communications of Augusta. Ga., and major metros such as the HOUSTON CHRONICLE, ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER and Denver's ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS.
