  • APPLE COMPUTER INC.
    Apple, a hardware and software supplier based in Cupertino, Calif., has announced that it has provided an early version of its next-generation operating system, Rhapsody, to more than 10,000 software developers.

    Rhapsody, which will be targeted at server and high-end desktop applications when it is introduced in 1998, will be delivered first on PowerPC platforms.   • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    Baseview, a subsidiary of Harris Publishing Systems Corp. which is based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has announced it is now installing a system at EDIPRESSE in Lausanne, Switzerland, and Lisbon, Portugal.

    EDIPRESSE is Baseview's biggest site to date with a total of 181 NewsEditPro IQue editorial workstations for seven publications based at Lisbon. EDIPRESSE also is installing 28 pagination packages, five PageWatch IQue production-tracking stations, two WireManager IQue stations and five AdManagerPro workstations. Phrasˇa, a European archiving solution, also is being installed.

  • DIGITAL INK CO.
    Digital Ink, the new media subsidiary of the Washington Post Co., has announced that PointCast 2.0, the latest version of the broadcast news delivery product made by PointCast Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif., will feature a washingtonpost.com channel.

    The washingtonpost.com channel features all of the stories from the front page of the dayÕs WASHINGTON POST as well as a few stories from the paperÕs other sections. Breaking news headlines and summaries are updated hourly throughout the day. Washingtonpost.com is the default channel for users who download PointCast version 2.0 in the Washington area.

  • GLOBALCENTER INC.
    GlobalCenter, a global digital distribution company based in Sunnyvale, Calif., and USA TODAY Information Network of Arlington, Va., have announced an accord under which GlobalCenter will provide nonstop distribution services for USA TODAY's West Coast on-line content. GlobalCenter uses geographically-dispersed distribution centers.

  • KNIGHT RIDDER NEW MEDIA
    Knight Ridder New Media, an on-line content provider based in San Jose, Calif., has announced the launch of CarHunter (http://www.carhunter.com/), a guide to automobile purchasing. The first site to use CarHunter is Miami HeraldLink (http://www.herald.com/), which is produced by Knight-Ridder's MIAMI HERALD.

    CarHunter, which provides localized auto listings, consumer information and editorial content, features a searchable database of ads from the HERALD and access to the Kelley Blue Book guide to vehicle prices. CarHunter uses technology from Zip2 Corp. of Mountain View, Calif. Zip2 is on the Web at http://www.zip2.com/.


  • MISSION CRITICAL TECHNOLOGIES
    Mission Critical, a publishing software supplier based in Concord, Mass., has made two announcements:

    -- HELSINGIN SANOMAT (472k, morning) of Helsinki, Finland, is Mission Critical's first overseas site. SANOMAT has installed an AdFAX fax management system with nine AdCheck client workstations for fax processing. The AdFAX system will interface now to an existing advertising system made by System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento, Calif., and eventually to the paper's next advertising system, Enterprise, made by Atex Media Solutions of Bedford, Mass.

    -- The BOSTON GLOBE has agreed to beta test the latest MCT product, AdCapture, a software package designed to put the text of display ads on a World-Wide Web site. AdCapture both recaptures display ad text for the Internet and provides fielded data for those ads. AdCapture uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology to scan camera-ready images and extract text; in the next phase of product development, it will extract text from EPS and PDF files.

    Extra! Read all about changes at the LOS ANGELES TIMES! NewsInc., the newsletter of the business of the newspaper business, produced an extra about the resignation of Editor Shelby Coffey III and dramatic changes in the relationship between the newsroom and business offices. The two-page special, produced after NEWSINC. had closed, was wrapped around the Oct. 13 issue.

  • QUARK INC.
    Denver-based Quark, maker of the page layout program XPress, has released details about the next version of its web-site development tool, Quark Immedia 1.5. Expanded color handling facilities let users specify a unique 256-color palette for each page, if needed, while another new option lets users easily specify opacity and drop shadows for many objects, providing richer visual interest.

    New programming-language features include the introduction of variables, functions and expressions, allowing users to create projects that can perform complex mathematical calculations, change the positions of objects randomly, manipulate media content and automatically total and submit an invoice on-line.

    With version 1.5, Quark Immedia Viewer is now a native Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 application. Immedia 1.5 is priced at $995; an upgrade to version 1.5 will cost $125.

  • UNISYS CORP.
    Unisys, a global publishing systems supplier with U.S. offices in Blue Bell, Pa., has announced the recent sale of its products to IL MATTINO (110k, morning) of Naples, Italy. Unisys will install 175 workstations to run the Unisys solutions -- Hermes for production, WireCenter for capturing incoming copy and DocCenter for archiving -- which will be used to produce the paper's four daily editions. The system will run on three Sun Enterprise 3000 servers, replacing an Atex editorial system and a custom archive system.

    Unisys also has announced the sale of its DocCenter photo and text library solution to the SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER (120k, evening). The EXAMINER will be the first U.S. site for DocCenter; the Hearst paper will retire its 12-year-old SII LASR text library system. Users will have access to the new image and text archive through a web browser or a Windows-based PC. The text archive will be integrated into the newsroom's SII system, the EXAMINER said.

  • ZIP2 CORP.
    Zip2, a supplier of on-line publishing solutions based in Mountain View, Calif., has announced new partnerships with several U.S. newspapers.

    The HOUSTON CHRONICLE and SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS will post Zip2's on-line city guides to the CHRONICLE web site at http://www.houstonchronicle.com/ and the EXPRESS-NEWS site at http://www.express-new.net/. Zip2 also announced a similar partnership with Morris Communications Corp. of Augusta, Ga., which owns 31 newspapers.
