  • ADVANCED TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS INC.
    Advanced Technical Solutions, a publishing systems supplier based in Wilmington, Mass., has announced that it will work with FutureTense Inc., a supplier of Internet publishing software based in Acton, Mass., to provide a web publishing solution called WebBridge for Atex sites. WebBridge will be marketed and distributed through ATS.

    WebBridge includes server hardware and software that supports ATS integration with an Atex database. Using the ATS Gateway and NewsDesk editing system, WebBridge handles data conversion from Atex proprietary format to Microsoft Word Rich Text Format for editing to HTML for the Web. Access to queues and groups corresponds to a site's Atex structure. File locking is supported.

    FutureTense Internet Publishing System, part of the WebBridge package, is an integrated web publishing environment which will be formally announced at Seybold San Francisco. WebBridge was rolled out at the Association of Publishing Systems Users (APSU) conference held Sept. 20-24 in Norfolk, Va.

  • ALIS TECHNOLOGIES
    Alis Technologies, a supplier of language translation software for the Internet based in Montreal, Canada, has announced it will work with the LOS ANGELES TIMES to develop a translation-on-demand solution for parts of paper's web site, http://latimes.com/.

    The goal is to make the site's content -- more than 44,000 pages -- available in several languages to extend the reach of specific sections of latimes.com. Within three months, Alis and the TIMES intend to provide visitors with Spanish, Japanese and French versions of certain Entertainment and Destination LA sections. The user who selects one of those three languages will receive a page where all text has been machine-translated and the layout has been kept intact.


  • ASSOCIATED INFORMATION SYSTEMS INTERNATIONAL INC.
    AISI, a systems integrator and publishing software supplier based in Auburn, Calif., has signed a value-added retailer agreement with Tandem Computers Inc. of Cupertino, Calif., to resell Tandem's Himalaya, Non-Stop SQL/MX and Intel-based server technology.

    AISI also announced it has completed posting all of its web-based products to Tandem's Ultimate Uptime server, the Intel-based CS150, putting AISI's software products on a fault-tolerant dual processor server.

  • APPLIED GRAPHICS TECHNOLOGIES INC.
    AGT, a supplier of digital image management and pre-press services based in New York, has announced it has signed a multi-year contract with the NEW YORK TIMES to provide digital four-color advertising verification and proofing services, and digital pre-press services for the paper's expanded use of color.

    AGT will provide ad management and digital proofing of advertisements for all of the paper's daily and Sunday editions, and special four-color sections including weekly television listings. AGT will supply remote digital proofing for advertisers' approval of ads at its facilities in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Detroit and Washington, D.C.

  • INFOCON AMERICA
    The NEW YORK POST has formed an alliance with Infocon America, a publishing software and services company based in Newport Beach, Calif., to use Infocon's software to provide subscribers with an electronic version of the POST.

    The electronic version will be distributed with push technology incorporated into browsers from Microsoft and Netscape. Pages will be saved in Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) so that display advertising will appear on-screen as it does in print. Readers will view pages using Infocon's EasyView software, a version of Adobe's Acrobat Reader and Exchange electronic viewers.


  • JUNGLEE CORP.
    Junglee, a software supplier based in Sunnyvale, Calif., has announced that Westech ExpoCorp, the publisher of Virtual Job Fair based in Santa Clara, Calif., will use Junglee's "data dredge" technology to automate weekly updates to Virtual Job Fair's employment directory. The guide posts more than 20,000 job openings and 40,000 resumes. Junglee products will eliminate the need for Westech to manually update large amounts of information.

    More than 40,000 participants are expected to gather in San Francisco Sept. 29-Oct. 3 for Seybold San Francisco, a trade show and conference for the publishing market. Two key technology executives are scheduled to speak: Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates at 9 a.m. Oct. 1 and Apple Computer Interim CEO Steve Jobs at 9 a.m. Oct. 2. The topics of their speeches have not been announced.

    A special one-day session focusing on newspapers and new media will be held Sept. 30. Speakers will include Pete Basofin of the SACRAMENTO BEE, Neil Budde of the Wall Street Journal Interactive, James Calloway of NandO, H.
