  • AMICUS SYSTEMS LTD.
    Amicus, a pre-press software developer based in London, England, has introduced software and services to help companies needing to migrate to new computer systems to become Year 2000 compliant.

    Firms needing to extract legacy data from proprietary front-end systems will benefit from the Amicus software solution, which can be tailored to convert data during migration. Formatting can be added, stripped out or changed for the destination system.

  • ASSOCIATION OF PUBLISHING SYSTEM USERS
    The association's fall session, Sept. 20-24 in Norfolk, Va., will feature visits with suppliers, seminars and round table discussions about industry issues such as Year 2000 compliance, and hardware and software updates.

    Suppliers scheduled to attend include Advanced Technical Solutions, Agile, Baseview, Cascade, Cybergraphic, Digital Equipment, Digital Technology International, Edgil, EDS, Future Tense, Harris, Linopress, Managing Editor, T/ONE and Unisys.

    A field trip to the VIRGINIAN-PILOT is scheduled for Sept. 21 to see how the Atex system there has been updated for Y2K. Other events include short courses and round tables on Unix, Press2Go, Windows 95/97 and EdPage round table.

  • Digital Technology International
    DT, a publishing systems supplier based in Orem, Utah, has announced that the Portland (Maine) Newspapers, a division of Guy Gannett Communications, has bought a 180-seat integrated pre-press system to replace CSI advertising and editorial systems.

    The advertising installation will include 57 ClassSpeed ad sales workstations, 20 AdSpeed display ad production workstations and nine PlanBuilder ROP planning and classified pagination workstations. The editorial system will include software for 67 SpeedWriter licenses for reporters and 47 PageSpeed licenses for copy editors.

    The new system will use a mixture of Motorola PowerPC and Apple Macintosh workstations networked to four Sun Enterprise 4000 database servers. A Sun SPARC 5 will be used for wire capture.

  • DOW JONES CO. INC.
    New York-based Dow Jones has announced that is has signed an agreement with VeriSign Inc. of Mountain View, Calif., to develop a customized digital security infrastructure for Dow Jones Markets' intranet-based financial information and transaction applications.

    Security will feature digital certificates that verify user identities, providing a secure way for customers to access applications being developed by Dow Jones. Digital certificates, also known as Digital IDs, are used in the same way as birth certificates, passports or drivers' licenses, providing a means of validating a person's identity for electronic transactions and commerce.

    Once the certification system is in place, VeriSign will operate a digital ID center for Dow Jones.

  • EDGIL ASSOCIATES INC.
    Edgil, a business software supplier based in Chelmsford, Mass., has announced recent installations at the RIVERSIDE (Calif) PRESS ENTERPRISE, Copley's Fox Valley Press in suburban Chicago and HEMMINGS MOTOR NEWS in Vermont. The publications will automate payment processing for their advertising and circulation credit card payments using Edgil's EdgCapture software system. EdgCapture will interface with both Fox Valley's and Hemming's new Cybergraphic advertising systems as well as Riverside's Atex system.     Monotype, an imaging systems manufacturer based in Rolling Meadows, Ill., has announced the installation of MGS3, its OPI server/print spooler/graphic database solution, at the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL (174k, morning), NEW YORK DAILY NEWS (738k, morning), COLUMBUS (Ohio) DISPATCH (255k, morning) and MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL (309k, morning).

    Each newspaper chose a Dual MGS3 configuration, providing assurance of a continuous backup of images in the image database and all of the spoolers created for the print server. Both MGS3 workstations are active, so either platform can take over in the unlikely event of a problem.
