  • AMERICAN COMPUTER INNOVATORS INC.
    ACI, a publishing systems supplier based in Amherst, Mass., has announced the sale of its OpenPages content management solution to Tribune Media Services of Chicago. TMS will use OpenPagesÕ information workflow technology to keep track of thousands of graphic, text, photographic, animation and sound files created and distributed each week.

    ACI also recently sold an OpenPages content management solution with dynamic pagination and OpenPages Archive Database to the COLUMBIA (Mo.) DAILY TRIBUNE (17k, evening). The system will connect all users on an enterprisewide network.

  • BITSTREAM INC.
    Bitstream, a pre-press software suppler based in Cambridge, Mass., has announced it has entered into a licensing and development agreement with Atex Media Solutions, a publishing systems supplier based in Bedford, Mass. Under the pact, Bitstream's NuDoc technology will be incorporated into future Atex newspaper products.

  • CE ENGINEERING PUBLISHING SYSTEMS INC.
    CE Engineering, a software supplier based in Loomis, Calif., has made two announcements:

    -- Tandem Computers Inc., a computer systems manufacturer based in Cupertino, Calif., has accepted CE Engineering as a member of the Tandem Alliance Program. CE plans to use Tandem servers in Millennium, a Windows NT-based classified system whose development is set to begin in mid-August.

    -- New York-based Reuters America Inc. has signed a site license agreement for 459 units of the 32-bit version of Decade 33 Coyote emulation software, including spell check, for use throughout Reuters' North America editorial operation. A phased roll out will commence immediately.

  • CHICAGO TRIBUNE
    The TRIBUNE and the Multiple Listing Service of Northern Illinois Inc. have reached an agreement allowing for the electronic transfer of MLSNI's real estate property listings to the TRIB's Internet site for advertising. MLSNI's 27,000 Realtor subscribers in more than 3,000 offices can have their residential listings and photos posted free on the TRIB's HOMES Internet site, http://www.chicago.tribune.com/homes. The site supplies more than 25,000 real estate pages daily.


  • DIGIMARC CORP.
    Digimarc, a supplier of digital watermarking products based in Portland, Ore., has introduced MarcSpider, a service to search the World-Wide Web for digitally watermarked images. With MarcSpider, creators of digital images will be able to discover both authorized and unauthorized uses of their works migrating across the ÕNet. MarcSpider crawls the Web to locate Digimarc-watermarked images and reports their locations to their owners.

  • DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY INTERNATIONAL
    DT, a publishing systems supplier based in Orem, Utah, has announced that the AUSTIN (Texas) AMERICAN-STATESMAN (180k, morning) is installing a 270-seat DT editorial, graphics and pagination system.

    The first pages are due to go to negative before the end of 1997. Included are 105 SpeedWriter licenses for reporters and 97 PageSpeed copy editing and page make-up software licences. The AMERICAN-STATESMAN also is adding 17 AdSpeed licences and DT's Ad Management database to its advertising department.

  • JUNGLEE CORP.
    Junglee Corp., the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based creator of virtual database software, has announced that the Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition has adopted Junglee's JobCanopy to create http://careers.wsj.com/, a comprehensive on-line career clearinghouse.

    JobCanopy seamlessly integrates disparate, independent data sources, including unstructured formats such as web sites. Job seekers can enter queries based on such criteria as company name, industry, job function, location, level of education and salary.

  • NDS LTD.
    NDS, a provider of digital broadcasting solutions based in West Drayton, England, has announced completion of a major trial of its Data Broadcasting Network (DBN). NDS, in conjunction with Associated Press Television (APTV), broadcast a data carousel of multimedia content simultaneously with APTV's international news video feed. The main content of the data carousel was an electronic copy of the SUNDAY TIMES of London, including an MPEG video clip.

    Data were transmitted at 6 megabits per second, using only a quarter of a single satellite transponder's bandwidth. Much higher bit rates (30 megabits per second) will be tested in future trials; such transmission speeds would allow delivery of a CD-ROM's contents to a PC in under three minutes.

    Bill Gates is Topic A in the first issue of NewsInc. published by The Cole Group of San Francisco. Cole acquired the newsletter about the business of the newspaper business on July 31 from Cowles Business Media Inc. of Stamford, Conn.

    After 15 years as an electronic provider of business news and information, Bryn Mawr, Pa.-based NewsNet is terminating all operations. NewsNet customers will have full access to the company's extensive database until Aug. 31, 1997. The subscriber-based service cited a World-Wide Web filled with direct "publisher-to-user" communication as its reason for shutting down.

  • ZIP2 CORP.
    Palo Alto, Calif.-based Zip2, a provider of on-line content, has announced a business partnership with American Business Information Inc. of Omaha, Neb., owner of a business database. Under the agreement, Zip2 will license ABI's database of 16 million U.S. business listings. Zip2, which is working with scores of newspapers on-line, will feature a link to ABI's web site, http://www.salesleadsusa.com/.
