  • ADONE CLASSIFIED NETWORK INC.
    New York-based AdOne Classified Network Inc., a provider of solutions for publishing classified ads on the World-Wide Web, has introduced a flat-rate pricing structure. The flat rate packages -- QuickStart, QuickStart Plus, QuickNet and QuickNet Plus -- provide bundles of AdOne products and services that enable any customer to operate an on-line classified business tailored to its finances, technology needs and staffing for on-line publishing.

    QuickStart, AdOne's basic service, is designed for customers without a web site or on-line classified presence and are interested in outsourcing. Circulation-based pricing starts at $795 per month, plus a one-time set-up fee that starts at $995, for QuickStart (for start-up on-line enterprises), to $915 per month plus a one-time setup fee of $2485 for QuickNet Plus, a package for publications with web sites and on-line classified ad operations that are seeking enhanced technology capabilities at a fixed price.

  • DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY INTERNATIONAL
    DT, a publishing systems supplier based in Orem, Utah, has announced it is installing a client/server editorial, graphics and pagination system at the MACON (Ga.) TELEGRAPH (75k, morning).

    The 93-seat editorial system includes SpeedWriter for reporters, PageSpeed page make-up software for copy editors, and SpeedPlanner for automatically tracking modular text, pictures and display advertisements. Wire text and photo feeds will be handled by DT's WireSpeed and PhotoWire software.

  • GAZETTE TECHNOLOGIES
    Gazette Technologies, a division of the Gazette Co. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Heidelberg Finishing of Dayton, Ohio, have signed a marketing cooperation agreement.

    Newspapers will be able to combine demographic marketing information stored by Gazette Technologies' MarketInfo data warehouse software with packaging center production information in Heidelberg's PRIMA system.

    MarketInfo summarizes address, household and individual demographic information and allows users to identify newspaper carrier routes meeting demographic and consumer spending criteria, based on 415 product and service categories. With Heidelberg Finishing's PRIMA software, data from the business systems are turned into production plans; instructions can be downloaded directly to packaging equipment to automatically program and control the entire packaging operation.


  • JUNGLEE CORP.
    Junglee, a nascent new media software provider based in Sunnyvale, Calif., has announced the launch of Canopy, a product suite based on Junglee's patent-pending "virtual database" technology. Canopy is the first software to seamlessly integrate data drawn from a wide range of sources -- from legacy systems to sites on the World-Wide Web -- into comprehensive databases whose creation would be difficult if not impossible using other technologies.

    Canopy's combined databases can be used in conjunction with existing database management systems to deliver targeted information quickly and easily. Canopy applications are in use already, creating substantial on-line revenue streams for several of Junglee's enterprise customers, including the WASHINGTON POST, Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition, Knight-Ridder New Media and Westech.

  • MONOTYPE SYSTEMS INC.
    Monotype, an imagesetter manufacturer based in Rolling Meadows, Ill., has introduced the ProofExpress 750C Plus, a 24-inch-wide color proofer that is fully LaserBus compatible.

    The 750C Plus produces broadsheet-sized newspaper proofs in less than two minutes from a roll of material up to 150 feet in length; prints are automatically cut and collected in a basket for easy access to finished proofs.

    Using Monotype's PrintExpress software, jobs can be RIPped once, for a high-resolution imagesetter, output twice, first to the ProofExpress 750C Plus. If the job is approved, the bitmap can be output to the high-res recorder directly.

  • NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
    The New Media Federation, a division of Vienna, Va.-based NAA, conferred its Digital Edge Awards at CONNECTIONS '97, a conference devoted to new media held July 18-20 in San Francisco. The "Edgie" awards recognize creativity and risk-taking in the advancement of on-line newspapers as viable and effective businesses.

    In their second year, the Edgies have been expanded to 15 awards in seven categories: Best Online Newspaper Site; Online Advertising; Classified Use of New Media; Public Service; Best Interactive Feature; Award of Excellence, and the Pioneer Award.

    The Pioneer Award went to Chris Jennewein, vice president/technology and operations, New Media, Knight-Ridder Inc., based in San Jose, Calif.

    The CHICAGO TRIBUNE won for Best Online Newspaper among papers with more than 150,000-circulation; it was singled out for its "keen editorial judgment and an eye to the exploratory habits of on-line readers."

    Other award winners included the GRAND FORKS (N.D.) HERALD, public service (flood coverage); STAR TRIBUNE, Minneapolis, public service (education site); KANSAS CITY STAR, best classified use of new media; NEW YORK TIMES, on-line advertising, and DALLAS MORNING NEWS, for posting its Timothy McVeigh confession story on the Web.

  • SYBASE INC.
    Vignette Corp., a software provider based in Austin, Texas, and Sybase, a database developer based in Emeryville, Calif., have announced they have signed a global reseller agreement in which Vignette StoryServer 2.2 will be offered as Sybase's web content management solution. StoryServer's architecture separates content from format and enables template-based site development.

    Sybase is authorized to provide sales, support and consulting for Vignette StoryServer worldwide. The two firms plan to bundle StoryServer with Sybase products for the creation of integrated web solutions under the Sybase brand.

  • SYSTEM INTEGRATORS INC.
    SII, a publishing systems supplier based in Sacramento, Calif., has announced that beta testing of SII Gateway, an interface developed by SII and Grover Digital Technologies Inc., is near completion at the ARIZONA REPUBLIC in Phoenix.

    Gateway, which simplifies communication between an SII system and external systems, is being used in Phoenix to interface with an interactive voice response system from Spanlink Communications Inc. of Seattle. Spanlink's ExtraAgent for Classified software gives REPUBLIC advertisers with a voice menu for routing their calls. An SII-developed standard interface lets the IVR interact with the newspaper's classified advertising system.

  • CHICAGO TRIBUNE
    The TRIBUNE (685k, morning) has announced that it will nearly triple the number of community web sites it operates and will hire at least 25 new employees to support them. The new editorial staff members will support the on-line expansion from within the paper's existing metropolitan news operation, focusing on community news, activities and sports both on-line and in the newspaper.

  • TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
    Chicago-based Tribune Media Services has launched FeatureServ, a web-based newspaper features delivery service that enables TMS customers to download print and interactive comics, cartoons and puzzles over the Internet.

    Accessible from TMS' site, http://www.tms.tribune.com/, FeatureServ requires a standard web browser, Internet access account, TMS customer account and a way to manage the files once they are downloaded.
